Angels' Salas, Ramos, Pestano and Morin self-destruct in loss

by Jason Butt | CBSSports.com
(4/23/15) Angels relievers Fernando Salas, Cesar Ramos, Vinnie Pestano and Mike Morin all had poor outings in Thursday night’s 9-2 loss to the Athletics.

After Jered Weaver went six innings and gave up one run, Salas put runners on first and third to start the seventh. Ramos came in and immediately gave up an RBI single to Stephen Vogt.

Pestano then took over and immediately threw a wild pitch that scored a runner. He then gave up a homer to Billy Butler and later gave up an RBI single to Brett Lawrie.

Salas was credited with the loss. He's now 0-1 this season.

Morin then allowed three runs in the eighth inning.

Angels' Fernando Salas committing to sinker

by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com
(2/23/15) Angels releiver Fernando Salas is looking to induce more ground balls this season, and that means changing his pitch selection.

"It's important for giving the infield an opportunity to get the double plays," Salas told MLB.com's Alden Gonzalez. "Fly balls can sometimes be the difference in a game. I'm trying to get more ground balls."

Salas has thrown his sinker less than five percent of the time. The result is a large number of fly balls, which can be dangerous to a reliever. Salas saw how dangerous in the postseason last year, when he gave up a game-winning home run in the ALDS.

This season, Salas plans to go to the sinker more often, replacing the four-seam fastball he's relied on in the past, a pitch that's much easier for a batter to loft into the air. Salas shied away from the sinker in the past, because he felt it was "inconsistent".

"I've been working really hard on that sinker," he said.

Angels, Fernando Salas settle at $1.37 million

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(1/16/15) The Angels and Fernando Salas have agreed to terms on a one-year, $1.37 million contract for 2015, avoiding arbitration, reports the Los Angeles Times. The reliever received $870,000 in 2014.

Salas went 5-0 with a 3.38 ERA, a 1.09 WHIP and 61:14 K:BB ratio over 58 2/3 innings last season.

Report: Angels' Richards, Freese expected to be tendered offers

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(12/1/14) The Angels are expected to tender a contract offer to third baseman David Freese by Tuesday's deadline, according to the Los Angeles Times. Freese is expected to make $6.3 million in arbitration.

However, the team is not expected to tender an offer to infielder Gordon Beckham. The team would like to have Beckham back on the roster next season, but not for the $5 million he is projected to make in his third year of arbitration.

The Angels are also expected to tender offers to Garrett Richards, Kevin Jepsen, Hector Santiago, Fernando Salas and Collin Cowgill.

Fernando Salas picks up win No. 5 in extras

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(8/29/14) Angels reliever Fernando Salas kept his record perfect on the season as he picked up the win in a 4-3 victory over the A's Thursday.

Salas pitched a perfect top of the 10th inning, striking out one batter and retiring the side in order on 14 pitches. He picked up the win when the Angels scored in the bottom half of the inning, moving his record to 5-0 while lowering his season ERA to 2.23 in 48 1/3 innings of work.
