| Daniel Bard shut down from games at Double-A |
by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com (5/21/13) Red Sox Double-A Portland pitcher Daniel Bard has been shut down from throwing in games, the Boston Globe reports Tuesday.
Bard, who last saw game action May 15, is throwing only bullpens right now. Bard is getting the time off to deal with both mental and pitching struggles. He has a 6.39 ERA over 12 2/3 innings with Portland with 17 walks.

| Red Sox not ready to take Daniel Bard out of Double-A |
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com (5/16/13) Red Sox manager John Farrell told reporters Thursday that he has no plans yet to take reliever Daniel Bard out of Double-A Portland. In fact, he has not considered shutting him down or sending him down to extended spring training.
Bard has been in touch on regular basis with a mental coach to help him deal with his recent struggles. He issued 13 walks in five outings since being demoted to the minors in late April. Bard is 0-1 with a 6.39 ERA in 13 appearances with the Portland Sea Dogs.

| Red Sox being patient with Daniel Bard |
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com (5/16/13) Red Sox reliever Daniel Bard continues to deal with command issues at Double-A Portland. He walked five batters Wednesday and has issued 13 walks in five outings since being demoted to the minors in late April.
"I’m concerned over, of course, how he’s doing mentally," Red Sox pitching coach Juan Nieves said told WEEI.com. "You’re always concerned about a guy’s mental state when he’s engaged in an at-bat and doesn’t do well. It continues to be the same thing."
Red Sox president and CEO Larry Lucchino weighed in Thursday saying the Red Sox aren't giving up on Bard.
"The general plan is one of patience," Lucchino said. "Daniel has tremendous talent, he’s shown that at the big-league level. You don’t need to be a pitching guru to appreciate the kind of pitcher that he once was. We think he can regain that. But it’s going to take some patience, it’s going to take some specialized tutoring and attention. I hope he can bounce back. There’s plenty of room in our bullpen for him."

| Daniel Bard yields five walks at Double-A |
by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com (5/15/13) Red Sox reliever Daniel Bard, who is pitching at Double-A Portland, continues to suffer from command issues, WEEI.com reported Wednesday. His inability to find the strike zone has almost reached the point of crisis mode.
On Wednesday, Bard gave up a hit, unleashed two wild pitches and walked five batters over one inning. He gave up two runs in that inning. Bard worked around two walks in the sixth inning before recording three outs. He then walked all three batters he faced in the seventh before being removed.
In five appearances since returning to Double-A after a brief promotion to the big leagues, Bard has thrown strikes on just 34 percent of his pitches. He has 13 walks over 3 2/3 innings.

| Daniel Bard can't find plate at Double-A |
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com (5/12/13) Red Sox reliever Daniel Bard had another disastrous outing for Double-A Portland Saturday. Bard allowed one run in 2/3 innings without issuing a hit because he walked four batters.
Bard has had trouble throwing strikes since being demoted to Portland in late April. Saturday was the fourth-straight outing he failed to throw more than 50 percent of his pitches for strikes. In fact, he's had a 37 percent strike rate (29 of 79 pitches) since his return, according to WEEI.

| To say Daniel Bard had a nightmare of a 2012 season would be doing a disservice to nightmares. Finally granted his wish of starting, Bard, a former first-round pick of the Red Sox, was destroyed by opposing batters, putting up a 5.24 ERA and 1.62 WHIP in his first 11 appearances. He was sent to the minors, where the starting experiment was briefly considered, then ultimately ditched. Bard returned to the Red Sox in late August as a reliever -- after sporting a 7.03 ERA in 32 Pawtucket innings -- and pitched in six games. He was hit even harder as a reliever, with an 18.69 ERA in those appearances. Bard seems to be broken and we're not sure if the Red Sox are totally at fault, as he was a sure-thing, dominant pitcher before last season. Hopefully, with John Farrell back in charge, they can figure something out. Until you see signs, though, consider Bard waiver wire material in most formats. (Updated 12/3/12) |
