|Astros set staff for first spring game |
|by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com|
(2/25/14) Astros pitcher Lucas Harrell will start with the club Friday, according to MLB.com.
Harrell will get the nod for the team's first game of the spring. He'll be following up by Matt Albers, Peter Moylan and Josh Fields. Both Fields and Albers are thought to be in contention for the closer role.
Harrell posted a 5.86 ERA in 153 2/3 innings last season.
|Competition for Houston's closer's job remains wide open |
|by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com|
(2/17/14) Astros manager Bo Porter said Monday the competition for the closer's role is wide open between Josh Fields, Matt Albers, Chad Qualls and Jesse Crain, according to the Houston Chronicle. However, Porter acknowledged Qualls experience as a closer carries some value.
Crain, however, might have a tough time competing for the job this spring since Porter said Monday there is still no timetable for when Crain will throw off a mound. The veteran reliever is still recovering from right biceps surgery in October.
|Josh Fields could retain closer's role |
|by Al Melchior | Data Analyst|
(11/13/13) Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow told the Houston Chronicle that reliever Josh Fields earned a place among the team's closer candidates going into next season. Fields was the team's primary closer down the stretch in 2013, and Luhnow said the rookie "did a good job in that role at the end of the year, and I think he clearly deserves a chance to try and maintain that role."
The Astros will also look into free agent closing options, including Jose Veras, who saved 19 games for Houston before getting dealt to the Tigers last July.
|Josh Fields collects save No. 5 |
|by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com|
(9/13/13) Astros reliever Josh Fields converted his fifth save of the season Friday night against the Angels. The right-hander needed only 11 pitches as he struck out two in a scoreless ninth to preserve a 9-7 victory.
Fields is 5 of 6 in save opportunities, with a 5.73 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP.
|Josh Fields picks up fourth save |
|by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com|
(9/10/13) Astros reliever Josh Fields pitched the bottom of the ninth with a 6-3 lead in Seattle Monday night. Fields gave up a homer, but allowed the Mariners to get no closer in a 6-4 win.
Fields earned his fourth save of the season as he allowed just the one hit over an inning of work. He threw 20 pitches and his ERA is at 5.91. Fields has now saved games in back-to-back appearances for the Astros.
|Josh Fields is a rare example of a college closer who didn't take to the role right away in the minors, which explains why he didn't get called up to the majors until 2013, at age 27. At first, he looked like he might not be able to handle even middle relief at the highest level, but eventually, his mid-90s fastball and power curveball began to play up, giving him a 1.62 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 9.2 strikeouts per nine innings over his final 16 appearances. That's about the time the Astros turned over closer duties to him. It wasn't an especially meaningful changing of the guard. They just needed someone to handle the ninth inning after dealing Jose Veras to the Tigers. But Fields ended up performing so well in the role that general manager Jeff Luhnow said he'd have a chance to retain it. Of course, that was before the Astros signed both Jesse Crain and Chad Qualls, who are certainly more proven at the major-league level (with Crain looking like an idea closer-in-waiting if he can overcome his injury woes), but Luhnow hasn't revealed the team's plans for either. Most likely, Fields will need a big spring to retain the role, but he's enough of a candidate to deserve a late-round flier in leagues where saves are scarce.
