(4/28/13) Royals pitcher Will Smith was called up from the minors to start Game 2 of Sunday's doubleheader against the Indians. He allowed six runs (four earned) on seven hits over four-plus innings of work in the 10-3 loss.
The left-hander was tagged with a two-spot in the first before surrendering a three-run homer to Mike Aviles in the third. He was charged with his final damage in the fourth and was pulled for Bruce Chen after walking the leadoff batter in the fifth.
Smith, who threw 77 pitches, also struck out five in the defeat.

(4/21/13) The Royals have recalled Will Smith for Sunday's doubleheader to take up the 26th spot allowed to teams on doubleheader days, the Kansas City Star reports.
Smith gives the Royals a left-handed option out of the bullpen for the doubleheader against the Red Sox. Expect Smith to return to the minors following the games.

| Though he exhibited pretty good command, Will Smith never was much of a bat-misser in the minors, allowing 9.5 hits per nine innings over five seasons. So as you might expect, when the Royals called on him to make 16 starts over two separate stints last year, the only one getting jiggy with it was the player at bat against him. Smith did have a nice little five-start stretch in which he posted four quality starts early in the second half, but he quickly reverted to his old ways, surrendering 26 hits in 14 2/3 innings over his next three starts. What little good he provided was overshadowed by the bad. Now that James Shields, Wade Davis and Ervin Santana are on board, the Royals no longer have room in their rotation for Smith, but most likely, he wasn't a part of their long-term plans anyway. Thrown to the wolves at age 23 with a poor minor-league track record and little upside to speak of, his purpose was simply to eat innings in a lost season. As a Fantasy option, he's a lost cause.
