| Kirk Nieuwenhuis wears the hero cape |
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com (6/16/13) Kirk Nieuwenhuis hit a three-run homer that capped a four-run rally in the bottom of the ninth inning, sending the Mets to a 4-3 win against the Cubs Sunday. Nieuwenhuis parked a 1-0, no-doubter into the right-field seats at Citi Field off Cubs closer Carlos Marmol for his first home run this season.
Nieuwenhuis, who finished 1 for 3 with a walk, came into Sunday's game batting .077 (1 for 13) in six games (three starts) since his recall from Triple-A Las Vegas.

| Juan Lagares, Kirk Nieuwenhuis to share time in CF |
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com (6/9/13) Mets manager Terry Collins said outfielders Kirk Nieuwenhuis, who was recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas Sunday, and Juan Lagares will share playing time in center field. However, it might not be a strict lefty-righty platoon.
"I don't think we need to do a straight platoon," Collins said, per ESPN. "There might even be a time when they're both out there at the same time. That's certainly the reason why Juan is still here. We're getting to the stages where we've got to start taking a look down the road. So there certainly could be that time when they're both out there. But I think you want to pick your spots -- not to put Juan over his head or Nieuwy over his head against somebody you're just not going to be able to hit."

| Kirk Niuewenhuis back after Triple-A turnaround |
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com (6/9/13) Mets outfielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis was recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas Sunday to take the roster spot of outfielder Rick Ankiel, who was designated for assignment following Saturday's game against the Marlins.
Nieuwenhuis was demoted to the minors in late April following a slow start offensively. However, he found his stroke at Triple-A Las Vegas and homered eight times in his last 16 games prior to Sunday's recall. Nieuwenhuis credited Las Vegas manager Wally Backman and hitting coach George Greer for his turnaround.
"Wally and George have done a great job with helping me out, for sure," Nieuwenhuis said, per ESPN. "I owe a lot to them. They straightened me out and helped me out a lot. I was kind of lost when I came down here, not having at-bats in spring training. I was kind of in a funk, and they really helped me out. They really put a lot of effort into it."

| Kirk Nieuwenhuis to get the call Sunday |
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com (6/8/13) Mets outfielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis has been hammering the ball at Triple-A Las Vegas, and the team announced Saturday he will be recalled prior to Sunday's game against the Marlins.
Nieuwenhuis is hitting .232 for Las Vegas, but has three home runs in the last 10 games.

| Kirk Nieuwenhuis back on Mets' radar |
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com (6/4/13) Mets outfielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis has homered four times in his last 10 games for Triple-A Las Vegas and has eight home runs through 33 games. Las Vegas manager Wally Backman told Mets manager Terry Collins that Nieuwenhuis' homers are "legitimate" and not created because of the hitter-friendly enviornments in the Pacific Coast League, according to ESPN.
Collins said Nieuwenhuis' recent surge has put him back on the radar for a potential recall.

| Kirk Nieuwenhuis opened a lot of eyes early in 2012 after he was recalled in April and saw some steady playing time. He batted .301 with three home runs, 19 RBI and three stolen bases in his first 53 games before regression hit. Nieuwenhuis would hit just .174 with a .330 slugging percentage in the following 38 games before being optioned back to Triple-A. A foot injury down on the farm cut his season short but he is expected to compete for a starting job in 2013. The 25-year-old is an above-average defender who can hit for average and has hit close to 20 home runs in the minors before. Keep an eye on how he does during spring training because if Nieuwenhuis stands to see steady playing time in New York, he will be worth a look in deeper Fantasy leagues. Leave him for NL-only formats on Draft Day, however. (Updated 12/12/12) |
