Pedro Alvarez, Neil Walker out of Pirates' lineup
|by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com|
|(5/24/15) First baseman Pedro Alvarez and second baseman Neil Walker are both out of the Pirates' Sunday lineup.
Alvarez is replaced by Sean Rodriguez, who gets his second start of the year at first base. Rodriguez will hit sixth.
Walker's absence requires shifts at all other infield positions. Josh Harrison moves over from third place to replace Walker at second. Jung Ho Kang moves to third from shortstop, and Jordy Mercer returns to the lineup at short, for just the second time in eight games.
Pirates looking at mental approach to alleviate Jordy Mercer's slump
|by Sean d'Oliveira | CBSSports.com|
|(5/21/15) For the second-consecutive season, Pirates shortstop Jordy Mercer has started the season in a slump and manager Clint Hurdle said Mercer's struggles may be mental, reports the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
"That's what we worked last year, the mental part of it first, and then we got into the physical glitch or the mechanical glitch," Hurdle said. "It's similar in some areas, very similar in some areas. We've got to get his hands to work better."
Mercer is hitting .171 in 111 at-bats this season and Hurdle hopes giving Mercer a few games off will help him correct his swing.
"If we've got a mechanical situation where our hands aren't going where we want them to go, why?" Hurdle said. "What are you trying to do? What are you trying to generate? Are you trying to generate power, are you trying to generate lift?"
Pirates confident that Jordy Mercer emerging from slump

|(5/19/15) Pirates shortstop Jordy Mercer has lost playing time to Jung Ho Kang in the last week, but the Pirates see reason for optimism with him.
Mercer is hitting just .176, with a .434 OPS.
"We feel he's getting closer to some things," manager Clint Hurdle said, per MLB.com. "There's only one way to find out how close you are or where you are, that's to get back in a game environment and see. We'll take it one day at a time."
Pirates SS Jordy Mercer getting pushed aside by Jung Ho Kang
|by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com|
|(5/17/15) Pirates shortstop Jordy Mercer was out of the lineup again on Sunday in favor of rookie Jung Ho Kang, something that is becoming a more common occurrence. But manager Clint Hurdle doesn't prefer one to the other at this point, according to MLB.com.
"We told [Mercer] before the weekend started that he would get it off. We had a plan coming in," said Hurdle. "We'll figure it out as we go. I know the dynamic of working with Jung Ho, getting him more playing time. We'll see where it takes us."
Mercer is hitting just .176 with eight RBI in 108 at-bats on the season. Meanwhile, Kang is showing Hurdle a little more pop at the plate.
"They are different defenders. I compare Jung Ho to a Jhonny Peralta type," said Hurdle. "Jordy probably has more lateral range, and more experience with positioning, and the only way Jung Ho will get that is by continuing to go out there and get those reps. Both have very, very accurate arms."
Hurdle continues to say both will see even time for now.
"It doesn't benefit anyone for me to get ahead of myself," the manager said. "We'll continue to look for the best lineup we can put out there daily. Situations will present themselves. The game gives guys opportunities to do things.
"We'll see, I don't have a crystal ball. I do know Jordy will continue to work and to prepare himself. He is a very good defender and player who has shown us he will try to find his way back on the offensive side of the ball."
Slumping SS Jordy Mercer could have Pirates looking for deal
|by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer|
|(5/15/15) With shortstop Jordy Mercer continuing to struggle in 2015, some around the game believe the Pirates might start looking for a possible trade. But, as CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman reports, the Pirates already have Jung Ho Kang who represents an in-house option.
Kang got off to a slow start in his first season since coming over from Japan. Through April 28, he was batting just .189 with zero home runs and four RBI. But, since a three-hit game on April 29, Kang has been one of the hotter hitters in baseball. In that 11 game stretch, he is hitting .371, while splitting time between shortstop and third base.
So, if the Pirates have indeed seen enough from Mercer and his .183 batting average, Kang would seem to be a logical everyday replacement.

2015 Draft Prep: Spring position battles
From Rusney Castillo and Mookie Betts to an interesting Blue Jays rotation question, spring training always provides interesting position battles. Our Scott White takes a look at those most pressing in Fantasy.
|2014 summary: With Clint Barmes confined to the bench, Jordy Mercer had the shortstop job all to himself in 2014, but his part-time numbers from 2013 didn't translate completely, keeping him just an afterthought in mixed leagues. Of course, few owners would give him the time of day after his miserable start to the season. He was actually decent over the final four months, batting .278 with a higher OPS (.767) than all but five shortstops had on the year. |
Playing time status: Though Mercer initially beat out Barmes because of his bat (not that it took much), he emerged as a plus defender in 2014, which should buy him some favor even if he has another prolonged slump. The Pirates do have Korean standout Jung Ho Kang on the roster, but his defensive limitations may prevent him from playing shortstop on a full-time basis.
2015 outlook: Even with those dreadful first two months, Mercer s till averaged more Head-to-Head points per game last year than J.J. Hardy, Jean Segura, Xander Bogaerts and Andrelton Simmons. Of course, none of those four lived up to expectations, but it's nice to know Mercer is available as a fallback option if your intended shortstop suffers that same fate this year. And he should, in fact, be available after the draft ends, at least in mixed leagues.
