(2/27/14) The discomfort that caused Phillies pitcher Ethan Martin to leave the game against Toronto on Thursday was to his right shoulder. He will be examined Friday morning, per the Philadelphia Daily News.
|Ethan Martin made his MLB debut last season five years after being the 15th overall pick in the 2008 MLB draft. After a slow start to his pro career, Martin finally had a breakout season in the minors in 2012, going 13-6 with a 3.48 ERA. The Dodgers capitalized on Martin's success by packaging him in a trade to Philadelphia in the summer of 2012 for Shane Victorino, and a year later Martin made his debut for the Phillies. The results weren't pretty. Martin went 2-4 with a 6.90 ERA in his first seven starts before being moved to the bullpen. He would finish his rookie season 2-5 with a 6.08 ERA and 1.70 WHIP in 15 games (eight starts). Martin really struggled with his command, walking 5.9 batters per nine innings. Perhaps one of the few bright spots is that he struck out 10.6 batters per nine innings. Martin, who was an MLB.com top 100 prospect last season, has potential, but he might need more time in the minors before becoming a major-league regular. He's a long shot for the opening day rotation, so he can be left for mostly long-term keeper formats Draft Day.
