| Christian Friedrich rehabbing back |
by Ed Gauna | CBSSports.com (5/6/13) Rockies pitcher Christian Friedrich told MLB.com Monday that he is doing everything he can to make sure his back is healthy.
The left-hander is on the disabled list for Triple-A Colorado Springs and is rehabbing in Scottsdale, Ariz.
"The back is getting better, and I'm on a good rehab program," Friedrich said. "I've been here about a week and hope to be here for two, maybe three more. There's no real timetable since it's symptomatic, and we're going off how it feels. But so far, so good."
Friedrich went 0-1 with a 4.30 ERA in four starts for Colorado Springs before going on the DL.

| Christian Friedrich heads rotation at Triple-A |
by Ed Gauna | CBSSports.com (4/2/13) Rockies prospect Christian Friedrich will start the season opener for Triple-A Colorado Springs on Thursday, MLB.com reports. Friedrich, who is returning from a stress fracture in his lower back, was competing for a spot in the major-league rotation during the spring.
The left-hander went 5-8 with a 6.17 ERA in 16 starts for Colorado last season.

| Christian Friedrich's rotation hopes fading |
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com (3/22/13) Rockies starting pitcher Christian Friedrich has been considered a long shot to make the rotation in spring training, after being sidelined for a few weeks with a back injury. He did not make a very strong case in his second appearance Friday, as the Giants got to him early and often in Cactus League action. Friedrich allowed four runs on five hits and a walk in three innings of work. He allowed three of his five runs on a pair of home runs, while striking out three batters in an 11-6 loss.
After the game, the Denver Post reported that Drew Pomeranz has emerged as the clear leader for the fifth spot in the rotation unless the team makes an addition prior to opening day.

| Christian Friedrich makes Cactus League debut |
by Ed Gauna | CBSSports.com (3/19/13) Rockies pitcher Christian Friedrich made his Cactus League debut on Monday night against the Reds. He allowed two runs on four hits over two innings of work. Friedrich, who is a rotation candidate, was slowed this spring while recovering from a stress fracture in his back.
Friedrich went 5-8 with a 6.17 ERA in 16 starts in the majors last season.

| The Rockies had trouble finding reliable starting pitching last season, but despite a promising start to his year, Christian Friedrich was not a part of the solution. Friedrich looked dominant in his first two starts after his callup in early May, but in his subsequent 14 starts, the 25-year-old rookie registered a 7.03 ERA. As is the case with many Rockies pitchers, Friedrich was punished by the long ball. Over the course of the season, he allowed 14 home runs in 84 2/3 innings, and 10 of those came at Coors Field. Friedrich's season came to a premature end when he was shut down with a stress fracture in his lower back in early August. He could still wind up competing for a rotation spot in 2013, but having pitched only 30 innings at Triple-A, he could return to that level for more seasoning. That makes Friedrich a low-end option in deep NL-only leagues. (Updated 1/10/13) |
