Mariners make wholesale changes to spark lineup
|by Elliott Smith | Staff Writer|
|(5/20/15) The slumping Mariners juggled their lineup for Wednesday's game against the Orioles, hoping to find a spark for a team that hasn't lived up to expectations.
Willie Bloomquist returns to the starting lineup for the first time in 11 games, hitting second and playing left field, while Justin Ruggiano and Rickie Weeks also draw rare starts in center and DH, respectively.
Those moves bump Dustin Ackley and Brad Miller out of the lineup. Ackley has seen his average plummet to .186 this season. Miller has been one of the hottest Seattle hitters, but went 0-for-4 Tuesday to snap a six-game hitting streak.
Justin Ruggiano in, Dustin Ackley out of Mariners lineup Friday

|(5/15/15) The continued struggles of Dustin Ackley has Justin Ruggiano receiving a rare start Friday night for the Mariners against visiting Boston.
Ruggiano hasn't started since May 6, but he has two hits in his last three at-bats, including a home run in his lone at-bat Tuesday.
Ackley, who is out of the lineup, owns a .191/.213/.326 slash line.
Seth Smith starts in LF, Dustin Ackley moves over to CF for Mariners
|by Ted Leshinski | Staff Writer|
|(5/8/15) Seth Smith will leadoff and make his second start of the year in left field for the Mariners on Friday against the Athletics, while Dustin Ackley will hit eighth and move over from left and make his second start in centerfield.
Shortstop Brad Miller, who lost his starting job when Chris Taylor was called up last week, will serve as the team’s designated hitter and bat second.
With centerfielder Austin Jackson on the disabled list, the Mariners continue to shuffle their outfield lineup.
Mariners' Jackson, Ackley, Morrison not in lineup Monday
|by R.J. White | CBSSports.com|
|(4/27/15) Mariners first baseman Logan Morrison and outfielders Austin Jackson and Dustin Ackley are not in the starting lineup for Monday's matchup with the Rangers.
The Mariners are slotting Justin Ruggiano in the leadoff slot and starting him in center field. It's the 19th time he's acted as his team's leadoff hitter, and he's posted a .177/.261/.380 line with four home runs and four stolen bases in 79 at-bats while in the No. 1 slot.
Rickie Weeks is getting the start in left field and batting sixth Monday, while Willie Bloomquist is playing first base and batting eighth.
The game is a dead heat in Las Vegas, with both teams having the same odds (-105).
Seth Smith leading off for Mariners on Wednesday
|by Jason Butt | CBSSports.com|
|(4/22/15) The Mariners are going with Seth Smith at leadoff for Wednesday night's game against the Astros.
Smith will serve as Seattle's designated hitter for this game with Nelson Cruz playing right field. Dustin Ackley, who hit leadoff on Tuesday, is playing in left field and is batting seventh. First baseman Logan Morrison is hitting sixth.
|2014 summary: After the way he finished 2013 for the Mariners, batting .321 with an .870 OPS in his final 41 games, Dustin Ackley entered 2014 as sort of a renewed Fantasy sleeper. He wasn't getting drafted across the board, but because he retained eligibility at second base, he got some late-round looks as a middle infielder. Though he started off well, batting .265 with four home runs and a .759 OPS in his first 40 games, his final numbers were again underwhelming, though he did set career highs in home runs, doubles and RBI.|
Playing time status: The biggest tragedy for Ackley entering 2015 is that he's no longer eligible at second base, having not played a game there last year. Second base is deeper than it used to be, but it's still no comparison to the outfield. And the formats where you have to go deeper into the outfield pool, namely Rotisserie leagues, don't play to his strengths.
2015 outlook: Ackley makes contact at a fairly high rate, but it doesn't translate to an especially high batting average. Since he's not a big home run hitter or base stealer either, he has little hope of being an impact player in Fantasy. Now that he's only eligible in the outfield, he's sort of like a poor man's Nick Markakis, who himself is no slam dunk to be drafted. He has a better chance in Head-to-Head points leagues, though, if only the deeper ones, given his decent peripherals.
