| Jacob Turner not winning much in minors |

(5/5/13) Marlins starting pitcher Jacob Turner, who was demoted to the minors at the end of spring training, has won just once through six starts for Triple-A New Orleans. Turner is 1-3 with a 5.76 ERA and .294 opponents' batting average.
Turner has allowed less than four runs just once this season. He has struck out 17, walked 10 and allowed four home runs in 29 2/3 innings.

(4/8/13) Marlins pitching prospect Jacob Turner gave up five runs in four innings in his first minor-league start of the season.
Turner opening the spring as a candidate for the major-league club's starting rotation. He struggled, with a 9.69 ERA during the spring. Turner, 22, has been a highly-regarded prospect over his minor-league career, and still has plenty of potential. He should make an impact in the majors this season.
Turner did see some time with the Marlins last year. In 55 innings, he had a 4.42 ERA and a 4.79 FIP.

(3/26/13) I was disappointed to hear the Marlins optioned Jacob Turner to the minors Tuesday, but let's face it -- he deserved it after the spring he put together. Although, I kind of hoped this would happen. Why? I think the Tigers made a huge mistake by promoting Turner to the majors too soon. It seems like Turner -- a 2009 first-round pick -- has been around forever, but he's only 21 years old! I don't feel he got enough time to develop in the minors before his MLB debut and it's wreaking havoc on a once-promising career.
I know it's not going to help seasonal-league Fantasy owners, but I think it would be best for Turner to spend most, if not all, of the 2013 season in the minors. He still in the very early stages of his pro career and it seems he could benefit from honing his craft. Obviously, the Marlins aren't built to contend this season, so there's no need to rush Turner back to the majors.
After his acquisition from Detroit last season, we started to see glimpses of what made Turner an elite prospect in the minors. I don't think he will ever develop into a high-end Fantasy starter because his strikeout rate isn't great. But I'm not ready to throw the towel in on him either. I still think he has a bright future. The Marlins just need to take the weight of the world off his shoulders and let him get back to the basics.

(3/26/13) The Miami Marlins have optioned starting pitcher Jacob Turner to Triple-A New Orleans. While some felt Turner a lock for the rotation, his terrible 9.69 ERA this spring as well as his 9-to-5 strikeout-to-walk ratio forced the Marlins to start him in the minors.
CBS Sports Baseball Insider Jon Heyman says Turner did not pitch well enough to make the Marlins, though they hoped he would have. The move did not have anything to do with Turner's arbitration clock.
Turner is 2-6 with a career ERA of 5.19 over parts of two seasons with the Tigers and Marlins. He finished at 1-4 with a promising 3.38 ERA over his final seven starts for Miami last year. He'll begin the year in the minors and will hope to join the rotation if he can turn things around.

(3/24/13) Marlins starting pitcher Jacob Turner allowed four runs and five hits over 4 2/3 innings during Miami's 4-1 loss to Houston in a rain-shortened exhibition game Sunday. Turner flopped again during his fourth Grapefruit League start and walked four batters while striking out only one. The right-hander has now amassed nine walks to just five strikeouts this spring, which has led to concerns about his place in the Marlins' rotation for opening day.

| As one of the Tigers' prized prospects, Jacob Turner entered spring training in 2012 as a leading candidate to be the team's fifth starter. Turner did have some memorable moments in his rookie season, but not until first sustaining a shoulder injury in March, struggling in the minors and getting shipped to Miami in the deal that brought Anibal Sanchez and Omar Infante to Detroit. The Marlins didn't waste much time getting Turner into their rotation, calling him up after just five starts at Triple-A New Orleans. In seven starts with the Marlins, Turner turned in a 3.38 ERA and a sparkling 0.98 WHIP. That strong finish, along with the decimation of the Marlins' rotation via trade, all but cements Turner's spot in the 2013 rotation. Though he doesn't profile as a strikeout pitcher, Turner's control is good enough that he should be an asset in the ERA and WHIP categories. That should be enough to warrant owners using a late round pick on him in deeper mixed leagues. (Updated 11/30/12) |
