|by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com|
(8/14/14) The Pirates have acquired John Axford from the Indians, according to FoxSports.com
Axford joined Cleveland during the offseason. He posted a 3.92 ERA over 43 2/3 innings with the club. Axford will likely be a setup man for Pittsburgh.
|John Axford picks up five-out save |
|by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com|
(8/4/14) Indians pitcher John Axford faced four batters and recorded the last five outs of Monday's 7-1 win over the Reds for the save. It was his first save since May 3.
Axford allowed one hit and one walk while striking out two over 1 2/3 scoreless innings. He owns a 3.14 ERA and a 1.40 WHIP over 43 innings of relief.
|John Axford can't get out of jam for save |
|by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com|
(6/25/14) The Indians called on John Axford to close out Tuesday's game against the Diamondbacks, after Bryan Shaw faltered in the 11th inning.
With the Indians up 8-7 with one out in the 11th inning, Axford entered the game with the tying run on third. He could not pitch himself out of the jam unscathed, as he allowed the first batter he faced to tie it with a single.
Axford would eventually extended the game, but not before making it interesting. He loaded the bases on an intentional walk before striking out the Diamondbacks' No. 3 and 4 hitters consecutively to end the threat.
Axford has been working away from the closer's role for a while, after struggling mightily early in the season. He has a 3.82 ERA with 36 strikeouts and 24 walks in 30 2/3 innings on the season.

(6/14/14) Indians pitcher John Axford pitched a scoreless inning and was awarded the win Saturday afternoon against the Red Sox in Boston. Axford permitted one walk and struck out one in a scoreless inning of work. He owns a 3.21 ERA and a 1.50 WHIP in 28 innings of relief.
|Terry Francona: I'm still tinkering with closer spot |
|by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com|
(6/7/14) Terry Francona said Saturday that the goal remains to work deposed Indians closer John Axford back into that role, per MLB.com. He added that others are performing better in the ninth inning at this time.
He is likely referring specifically to Cody Allen, who has thrived as a closer in recent weeks. Allen has nailed down his last four save opportunities without giving up a hit and walking just one. Francona is still claiming a closer-by-committee approach, but Allen has been used in all save situations of late.
Axford has bounced back as a short reliever after getting bounced out as closer. He has surrendered just one earned run in his last 10 appearances.
|Andres Galarraga may have been the Big Cat, but John Axford is just the cat, at least as far as closers go. His lives never seem to run out. Sure, he dominated in the role in 2011, posting a 1.95 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 10.5 strikeouts per nine innings while piling up 46 saves, but with his shaky control and vulnerability to the long ball, he did the Brewers more harm than good in the two years thereafter. After losing his job to Jim Henderson by allowing nine earned runs in his first four appearances, he stuck around in middle relief for a few months before the Brewers shipped him to St. Louis. He was good enough in 13 appearances there for the Indians to take a flier on him this offseason, intending to give him one last shot as a closer. Throughout his struggles, he never lost anything in terms of stuff, which is reflected in his strikeout rate, so if he can just locate the ball properly and avoid tipping his pitches like he did at times in Milwaukee, he may pan out yet. But you shouldn't count on that in Fantasy, especially since the Indians have a presumed closer-in-waiting in Cody Allen. Axford is worth drafting, obviously, but he should be one of the last of the 30 closers off the board.
