|Mike Montgomery works to refine arsenal |
|by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer|
(11/21/13) The Rays are satisfied with the strides minor-league starting pitcher Mike Montgomery made in the Arizona Fall League in 2013, according to MLB.com. Specifically, they like the work he did with his breaking ball.
"He's working on a breaking ball, a curveball," farm director Mitch Lukevics said. "Some of these guys go from a curveball to a slider. Some guys can throw both, some guys can't. So you're trying to work and see what works best for him. He was out there working on a breaking ball, to be more proficient with a breaking ball. He felt good about it. We know that starters in the major leagues need a breaking ball, for the most part."
Montgomery, who came over in the Wil Myers trade, had a 4.83 ERA and 1.46 WHIP in 22 appearances, including 21 starts, between high Class A and Triple-A last year, but a 2.57 ERA over 14 innings in the Arizona Fall League, striking out 14 and walking four.
|Rays confident in Montgomery |
|by Nando Di Fino | Senior Fantasy Writer|
(2/6/13) Mike Montgomery, named the No. 8 prospect in the Rays system by MLB.com on Tuesday, is coming off two sub-par seasons after a run of brilliance early in his career. Montgomery had 5.32 and 6.07 ERAs in 2011 and 2012, respectively. But the Rays seem unconcerned. "He has the stuff and he has the wherewithal to be a very good pitcher," director of Minor League operations Mitch Lukevics told MLB.com. "We expect good things out of Mike Montgomery."
