| Rays confident in Montgomery |
by Nando Di Fino | Senior Fantasy Writer (2/6/13) Mike Montgomery, named the No. 8 prospect in the Rays system by MLB.com on Tuesday, is coming off two sub-par seasons after a run of brilliance early in his career. Montgomery had 5.32 and 6.07 ERAs in 2011 and 2012, respectively. But the Rays seem unconcerned. "He has the stuff and he has the wherewithal to be a very good pitcher," director of Minor League operations Mitch Lukevics told MLB.com. "We expect good things out of Mike Montgomery."

2013 Fantasy outlooks: Kansas City Royals
The Kansas City Royals traded star prospects for better pitching, but will it hurt or benefit the Fantasy owner? Nando Di Fino breaks it down in his team outlook.
|
| Just as Eric Hosmer and Mike Moustakas have helped provide some stability to the Royals starting lineup over the last couple seasons, Mike Montgomery was supposed to be the answer to the pitching end of the equation. A year ago, Baseball America rated him the 23rd-best prospect -- pitcher, hitter or otherwise -- in all of baseball. But he has fallen apart in the upper levels of the minors, posting a 5.69 ERA between Double- and Triple-A over the last two seasons. The Royals decided they couldn't wait around for him anymore, including him in the package of prospects that landed them James Shields and Wade Davis this offseason. The Rays have had plenty of success with young pitchers in recent years -- not only were Shields and Davis homegrown, but reigning Cy Young winner David Price and former Rookie of the Year winner Jeremy Hellickson were as well -- so perhaps they'll be able to get to the bottom of Montgomery's struggles (which are at least partially related to command) and get him back on track. Of course, even if they do, they don't figure to have an opening for him anytime soon. At age 23, Montgomery still has long-term keeper appeal, but his path to the majors isn't nearly as clear as it once was. (Updated 1/8/13) |
