Mike Montgomery pulled just shy of no-hitter
|by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com|
|(4/26/14) Rays pitching prospect Mike Montgomery nearly tossed a no-hitter Saturday for Triple-A Durham, but was removed with two outs in the ninth inning of his attempt.
Montgomery finished 8 1/3 innings having allowed just one walk, but was pulled in favor of reliever Brad Boxberger, who finished the no-hitter off. Montgomery was at 106 pitches in the outing, just three short of a career high, which is why he did not finish the inning.
Montgomery was a top-25 prospect in baseball as recently as 2012 according to Baseball America, but he has struggled since. Saturday's start dropped his season ERA to 2.81.

|(4/14/14) Rays pitcher Mike Montgomery had a solid outing his second time out Friday.
Montgomery only went five innings, but hasn't hit all that hard. He gave up just three hits and walked one over the course of his appearance. The 24-year-old lefty posted a 4.72 ERA in Triple-A last year.
Mike Montgomery works to refine arsenal

|(11/21/13) The Rays are satisfied with the strides minor-league starting pitcher Mike Montgomery made in the Arizona Fall League in 2013, according to MLB.com. Specifically, they like the work he did with his breaking ball.
"He's working on a breaking ball, a curveball," farm director Mitch Lukevics said. "Some of these guys go from a curveball to a slider. Some guys can throw both, some guys can't. So you're trying to work and see what works best for him. He was out there working on a breaking ball, to be more proficient with a breaking ball. He felt good about it. We know that starters in the major leagues need a breaking ball, for the most part."
Montgomery, who came over in the Wil Myers trade, had a 4.83 ERA and 1.46 WHIP in 22 appearances, including 21 starts, between high Class A and Triple-A last year, but a 2.57 ERA over 14 innings in the Arizona Fall League, striking out 14 and walking four.
