| James Darnell may need another surgery |

(5/20/13) Padres outfielder James Darnell could need another surgery on his injured left shoulder, MLB.com reports Monday. Darnell injured the shoulder with Triple-A Tucson May 14.
Darnell was in San Diego last week to confer with team doctors. He already has had two operations on the shoulder in 2011 and 2012. Darnell is likely to be sidelined for a long time.

(5/4/13) The Padres optioned outfielder James Darnell to Triple-A Tucson after activating him from the disabled list Saturday, the team announced. Darnell, who had been out since spring training with an oblique injury, recently completed a minor-league rehab assignment.

(5/1/13) Padres outfielder James Darnell played the field for Triple Tucson Tuesday, his first time doing so since beginning his rehab assignment, MLB.com reports. The 26-year-old has been sidelined since spring training due to a left oblique injury.
"He seems to be over his oblique," manager Bud Black said. "I think he's right about now probably considered a healthy player working his way back to the major leagues, based on performance."

(4/30/13) Padres third basemen James Darnell, who is on the 15-day disabled list with an oblique injury, started a minor-league rehab assignment with Triple-A Tucson Monday night. He went 1 for 4 with a double and two strikeouts for the Padres.

(3/31/13) The Padres have placed James Darnell on the 15-day disabled list, the club announced.
With both Chase Headley and Logan Forsythe out with injuries to begin the season, Darnell could have earned some at-bats in April at third base for San Diego. Instead, a strained left oblique pushes him to the DL as well, where he'll likely miss about another two weeks.
The Padres will use Cody Ransom and Jedd Gyorko at third base until Headley returns.

| At this time last year, James Darnell was seemingly on the verge of an everyday job in the big leagues. He was still learning the outfield, which was slowing him down, but the third base prospect was more or less a finished product, having hit .310 with 23 homers and a .953 OPS in 422 at-bats between Double- and Triple-A in 2011. But after getting promoted to the big leagues on May 11, Darnell played in only seven games before dislocating his left shoulder diving for a fly ball on May 18. That dive ended his season. Since then, Chase Headley has clearly solidified his place at third base, which means Darnell's only hope of breaking into the big leagues is in the outfield. Right now, the best he can hope for is a platoon role with Will Venable, and he'll need prove his health in the minors before he can claim even that. At age 26, Darnell's long-term value is very much in doubt. He's no better than a deep sleeper for NL-only leagues. (Updated 1/2/13) |
