|Ryan Flaherty 'excited' for 'great opportunity' |
|by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com|
(2/3/14) The Orioles have plenty of candidates to replace Brian Roberts at second base, including newcomer Jemile Weeks and prospect Jonathan Schoop, but Ryan Flaherty is considered the lead option to win the job, according to The Baltimore Sun.
"Every player wants to get every day at-bats," Flaherty said. "Obviously there’s 25 guys on the roster and there’s only room for nine or 10 [every day]. It’s definitely good to try to get into a rhythm but you have to earn that and that’s something you have to prove you can do. We’ll see what happens this year. I’m excited for it.
"It’s a great opportunity. You’ve got to take advantage of it and like I said, we’ll see what they think of everything but I’m excited to get going and it’s definitely a great opportunity."
Flaherty, who played second base, third base and shortstop in the minors, said Roberts helped him out "a ton" learning how to play second before the veteran infielder signed with the Yankees in the offseason.
"A lot of what I learned I have to give credit to him for sure," Flaherty said. "When you develop a relationship with someone and all of a sudden they’re gone, it’s tough. But it’s part of the business. It’s part of the game. The show moves on, you know."
|Orioles could start Ryan Flaherty at second base |

(12/8/13) The Orioles are not actively looking for a second baseman and could go with Ryan Flaherty as the starter at the position, MLB.com reports.
Flaherty hit .224/.293/.390 with 10 home runs and 27 RBI in 246 at-bats last season. The team could also opt to use recent acquisition Jemile Weeks at the position.
|Ryan Flaherty homers twice in victory |
|by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com|
(9/25/13) Orioles third baseman Ryan Flaherty had a big game Wednesday night during a win over the Blue Jays. Flaherty homered twice and drove in four runs in the ballgame.
Flaherty now has 10 homers on the season as he blasted a two-run shot deep to right field in the third inning and added a second two-run homer in the eighth. Flaherty finished the game 2 for 2 with a walk and three runs scored and is now batting .218 on the year.
Flaherty recorded his first hits since Sept. 8 and had just two -- both doubles -- in September before Wednesday's game. Flaherty is attempting to prove he can be an everyday player for the Orioles next season.
|Ryan Flaherty fills in for Manny Machado |
|by Al Melchior | Data Analyst|
(9/24/13) Ryan Flaherty was in the Orioles' starting lineup for Tuesday's game against the Blue Jays. Flaherty fills the void at third base left by Manny Machado, who injured his knee in Monday's game versus the Rays and is almost certainly out for the season.
MASN.com reported that Flaherty, Danny Valencia and Jonathan Schoop are the leading candidates to replace Machado in his absence.

(9/3/13) Orioles infielder Ryan Flaherty has been called up to the majors Tuesday.
Flaherty had been with the club earlier in the season, but was sent down in late August. He was expected to return once rosters expanded. Flaherty is hitting .218/.280/.364 in 220 at-bats.

Monell hits 3-run homer to lead Orioles over Twins
FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) Johnny Monell hit a three-run homer to key a five-run third inning, leading the Baltimore Orioles to an 11-5 win over the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday night.
|Ryan Flaherty hit .224 with 10 home runs and 11 doubles over 246 at-bats for the Orioles in 2013. And he is penciled in as the starting third baseman for 2014, although that will likely come with an expiration date, as Manny Machado should return from offseason knee surgery by late April. For deep AL-only Roto owners, Flaherty's second base eligibility could make him a viable short-term filler for the season's first few weeks -- and any complications with Machado's return will only add to his value. But once Machado returns, Flaherty loses pretty much all of his value, barring a Jemile Weeks flameout. Flaherty is worth a reserve pick in AL-only Roto leagues.
