|Travis Wood sharp over seven shutout innings |
|by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com|
(9/9/13) Cubs starter Travis Wood was looking to get back on track when he took the mound Monday in Cincinnati. After his outing, it was safe to say he accomplished his mission.
Wood shut out the Reds over seven outstanding innings for the win to improve to 9-11 on the season. He allowed just six base hits and didn't walk a batter over 100 pitches. He struck out seven and his ERA is at 3.05.
The 26-year-old has recorded 14 innings without an earned run allowed over his last three starts. Unfortunately, he also suffered a loss in between with four runs allowed over seven frames. Still, he's gone seven innings in three straight and that is impressive. Wood has had his struggles this season for the Cubs, but was sharp Monday. He'll get another start Saturday at Pittsburgh in another tough matchup.

(9/2/13) Cubs starting pitcher Travis Wood dropped to three games under .500 during Monday's 4-3 loss against the Marlins. Wood (8-11) allowed four runs on nine hits and two walks, while striking out three in seven innings.
Wood was hurt by the long ball Monday. He gave up a one-out home run to Christian Yelich in the first inning and then surrendered a go-ahead, three-run homer to opposing pitcher Henderson Alvarez in the second inning, which stood as the game winner.
Wood is slated to be back on the hill Sunday against the Brewers. He has a 2.84 ERA in one start against Milwaukee this season.
