Wood takes loss vs. Astros: Cubs pitcher Travis Wood made his second start of the season on Tuesday night against the Astros. He allowed two runs on two hits with two walks over 5 2/3 innings in the 2-1 loss. The left-hander surrendered a home run to Jose Altuve to start the game before settling down over his next four frames. Then in the sixth, he was pulled for Shawn Camp after issuing a two-out walk. The bullpen would allow the inherited runner to score, charging Wood with his final damage. Wood also struck out three while taking his first loss of the season. (Updated 05/22/2012)

Fantasy Analysis
Wood pitched well enough to win on Tuesday but he got his pitch count up early and could not make it through the sixth inning. Still, he has allowed just five earned runs in two outings this season and should continue to see starts with Chris Volstad down in the minors. The 25-year-old has some intriguing upside in Fantasy so consider adding Wood in NL-only formats. His next start is scheduled for Monday against the Padres, which lines him up for two starts during Week 9 (May 28-June 3). As the Theo Epstein era begins in Chicago, so too does the Cubs' rebuilding process. Scott Miller says deep pitching and Starlin Castro give them a chance to improve quickly, but scoring runs will be a problem.
Travis Wood is hoping a change of scenery will help improve his production. After finishing 11-10 with a 4.18 ERA in parts of two major-league seasons with the Reds, Wood was shipped to the Cubs during the offseason in exchange for relief pitcher Sean Marshall. Wood, who was Cincinnati's second-round pick in the 2005 MLB Draft, began last season in the team's starting rotation before having issues with consistency. The 25-year-old surrendered several fly balls and was tagged for at least six earned runs in three of his first six starts. Saddled with a 5.11 ERA, he was sent to Triple-A Louisville before returning to make four appearances out of the Reds bullpen at the end of the season. Now, the left-hander will have to fight for a position in the Cubs' starting rotation, but could have an advantage in the righty-dominated group. If he earns a starting spot, Wood could be a decent option in the later rounds of NL-only Fantasy drafts. (Updated 2/13/12)
