Athletics LHP Fernando Abad very bad this season
|by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com|
|(5/20/15) The recent struggles of Athletics reliever Fernando Abad might not be so troublesome if not for one factor. That is, he's their lone lefty out of the bullpen. His problems are making it difficult for Bob Melvin to strategize.
Abad faced three batters in the Tuesday night loss to Houston and allowed home runs to left-handed hitters Colby Rasmus and Jason Castro. It's not what Melvin had in mind. But then, he's grown accustomed to it - Abad owns a 7.36 ERA and has yielded 14 hits in 11 innings.
"He's our only lefty. We've got to figure out how to use him," Melvin told MLB.com. "The last couple times, he seemed to be pretty good, like what we saw last year, and the pitch to Rasmus, it's 0-2, he's trying to go away, it looked like he missed the entire other side of the plate."
Abad, who has given up seven hits in 18 at-bats to first hitters he's faced, said his delivery is fine, but complained about his location.

|(4/13/15) Manager Bob Melvin said that the Athletics have been laid low by a 10-day cold bug that has been working its way through the clubhouse. Among the players that have already had it are Sonny Gray, Fernando Abad, Stephen Vogt and Ike Davis.
Kendall Graveman was fighting the illness when he made his first start, Melvin said. Graveman gave up seven earned runs in three and a third innings.
