Noesi a tough-luck loser: Mariners starting pitcher Hector Noesi picked up his fifth loss of the season on Tuesday against the Rangers, however it is hard to blame him for this one, as he held the powerful Rangers lineup to just three runs in eight innings. He allowed only three hits and two walks in the game, however the Rangers timely hitting and the Mariners lack of offense ultimately sunk him, as he picked up the loss in a 3-1 game. Noesi struck out a career-high seven batters in the game, however his record still fell to 2-5 on the season. (Updated 05/23/2012)

Fantasy Analysis
Noesi has now lost two games in a row due to the failures of his teammates, as he pitched 6 1/3 strong innings last time out before the bullpen lost him the game. These last two starts are a good sign for him, as he was struggling mightily beforehand. He has lowered his ERA to 5.26 on the season and is starting to trend in the right direction. Noesi is set to start one more time in Week 8 (May 21-27), on Sunday against the Angels, a team he has only faced in relief before. The Angels rank second in the American League in runs scored per game, so Noesi can be considered a viable AL-only option. (Updated 05/23/2012).

Early this offseason, not a day went by when Yankees general manager Brian Cashman wasn't singing the praises of Hector Noesi, a 25-year-old right-hander who was forced into middle relief during his 2011 rookie season. He'd talk about how Noesi was hitting 97 on the radar gun during the Venezuelan Winter League. He'd talk about how Noesi deserved a rotation spot out of spring training, comparing him to last season's under-the-radar breakthrough, Ivan Nova. He'd rave and rave about Noesi -- a player nobody ever considered a top prospect -- until, finally, he found a taker for him in the Mariners. Granted, Jesus Montero was the main return in the Michael Pineda deal, but considering Noesi was a part of it, you can't help but wonder how much of Cashman's praise was genuine and how much of it was sales pitch. Of course, Noesi does throw fairly hard and has a favorable minor-league track record. Chances are he'll be able to hold down a rotation spot for the Mariners and may even post a respectable ERA playing half his games at Safeco Field. But given the lack of supporting cast, he's unlikely to make a significant contribution in mixed leagues. You can leave him for AL-only formats. (Updated 1/25/12)
