Tigers RHP Al Alburquerque still has trust of Ausmus
|by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com|
|(5/14/15) A Tigers bullpen that has been their Achilles heel in recent seasons could use an effective Al Alburquerque. And that means the Alburquerque that averaged 11 strikeouts per nine innings heading into this season.
Alburquerque has not allowed a run in his last five appearances, but he's given up seven hits with just one strikeout over those 4 1/3 innings. Brad Ausmus, however, believes he can still count on him to fan a batter when needed.
"Especially against the right-handed hitter, I think he has the ability to get that strikeout," Ausmus told MLive.com. "It would be nice to have that (in the bullpen). ... I think he's moving in the right direction really. He's a lot better now that he was a month ago."
Alburquerque, who didn't allow a home run in more than 56 innings pitched in his first two years in the majors, surrendered three during a two-game stretch and now owns a 6.75 ERA. His velocity has been down, resulting in few strikeouts. He has just six in 10 2/3 innings in 2015.

Tigers bullpen all but set for opening day
|by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com|
|(2/28/15) Tigers manager Brad Ausmus is feeling confident about his pitching staff headed into the start of the season. So much so, that he's expecting six of the seven spots to already be taken by Joe Nathan, Joakim Soria, Bruce Rondon, Al Alburquerque and Joba Chamberlain, reports MLive.com.
"Those six, it'd be surprising if they weren't on the team," Ausmus said Friday morning. "Something strange would have to happen just based on their performances from the past."
This leaves Alex Wilson, Josh Zeid and Buck Farmer all battling for the final slot in the bullpen.
"You're always concerned about injuries," Ausmus said. "I think that's where the depth comes into play, where, if something unexpected comes up, we have a lot of arms we feel like can produce at the major league level. ... If something happens at any time, we feel that we have a quality arm that we can slide right in."
