| Steve Johnson optioned to minors after loss |
by Bill Passonno | CBSSports.com (5/12/13) Orioles pitcher Steve Johnson (0-1) surrendered six runs and seven hits during his season debut in Baltimore's 8-5 loss at Minnesota on Saturday night. Johnson, who was optioned back to Triple-A Norfolk after lasting just four innings, walked four batters and struck out three.
"I couldn't get a good feel for my pitches," he said. "I couldn't get my secondary stuff over. I started off all right, but I couldn't make a pitch to get out of that inning. It's unfortunate that the team gives you that lead they gave you to not being able to make a pitch and limit the damage. It's not good."
Johnson was the ninth pitcher to start for Baltimore this season, tying the team with the Dodgers for most in the majors.

| Steve Johnson optioned to Triple-A |
by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com (4/30/13) The Orioles activated pitcher Steve Johnson from the 15-day disabled list Tuesday and optioned him to Triple-A Norfolk, MLB.com reports.
Johnson went 5 2/3 innings during a rehab start with Norfolk Monday, allowing two earned runs on four hits and two walks. He struck out eight and showed improvement from his first outing for the Tides when he gave up four runs in five innings with three Ks.
Johnson could eventually rejoin the Orioles' rotation.

| Steve Johnson solid in rehab start |
by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com (4/30/13) Orioles starter Steve Johnson, who is currently rehabbing an injured back with Triple-A Norfolk, took the mound for the Tides Monday night. Johnson earned a no-decision in a solid performance against the Toledo Mud Hens.
Johnson went 5 2/3 innings as he allowed two earned runs on four hits and two walks. He struck out eight batters in the performance. He showed a clear improvement from his first outing for the Tides when he allowed four runs over five innings with three Ks.
The Orioles have not settled on a No. 5 starter yet this season. Jake Arrieta, Josh Stinson and Zach Britton have all taken turns in the spot. Johnson, Jair Jurrjens and Freddy Garcia appear to be the next few options the Orioles will attempt to use.

| Steve Johnson doesn't throw hard, which might explain why nobody cares to list him among the Orioles' top prospects. It certainly isn't because of his numbers. In 31 appearances, including 18 starts, between the majors and minors last year, he had a 2.64 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 9.2 strikeouts per nine innings. And he was even better in the majors than the minors. For the most part, he was a reliever for the big club, but he wasn't any less dominant in his four starts, compiling a 1.18 WHIP and 10.2 strikeouts per nine innings. With all of their starters back to full health to begin 2013, the Orioles simply don't have room in their rotation for Johnson, and as a long reliever, he's not going to pitch regularly enough to factor in Fantasy. But if an injury opens a rotation spot for him midseason, he might just pitch well enough to keep it. Nobody's calling Johnson the next Kris Medlen, but his path to this point in his career is similar. Don't let him sneak up on you in AL-only leagues. (Updated 1/9/13) |
