| Steve Johnson mildly improving |
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com (6/13/13) Orioles pitcher Steve Johnson told reporters felt mild improvement from his strained oblique Thursday. Johnson has been sidelined since June 5 with the injury and is not expected back until at least late June.

| Steve Johnson diagnosed with oblique strain |
by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com (6/9/13) Orioles pitcher Steve Johnson had an MRI taken last week on his injured side, MLB.com reports. The MRI revealed a slight strain of his left oblique.
Johnson is on the 15-day disabled list. He was placed there Thursday and is rehabbing in Sarasota at extended spring training.

| Steve Johnson headed for MRI |
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com (6/6/13) Orioles pitcher Steve Johnson will have an MRI on his side in the next couple days, according to the Baltimore Sun.
Johnson was placed on the disabled list with an oblique issue Thursday, and the team wants to know its severity. The Orioles could add another pitcher soon but could get Pedro Strop back Saturday.
Johnson has an 8.49 ERA in 11 2/3 innings.

| Steve Johnson expected to hit disabled list |
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com (6/6/13) Orioles pitcher Steve Johnson is absent from the team's lineup card Thursday and is expected to be placed on the disabled list, according to MASN.
Outfielder Nick Markakis is expected to miss a few games to attend a family funeral, and the team has likely promoted outfielder Xavier Avery to be his temporary replacement. Avery is on the team's lineup card Thursday, but the move has not been officially announced.
In order to make room for Avery, Johnson will be put on the disabled list with an oblique injury. He has an 8.49 ERA through 11 2/3 innings.

| Steve Johnson has sore left oblique |
by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com (6/6/13) Orioles reliever Steve Johnson, who pitched 2 1/3 innings Wednesday in Houston, has a sore left oblique muscle, the Baltimore Sun reports.
Manager Buck Showalter checked on Johnson following the game after he appeared to grimace on a pitch. Johnson believes the issue is minor and will be re-evaluated Thursday. Johnson also said he's never had oblique issues. He felt it warming up before his outing started but pitched through it.
He allowed three earned runs on three hits -- including two homers -- and two walks over his 2 1/3 innings. He did strike out five. His ERA is 8.49.

| Steve Johnson doesn't throw hard, which might explain why nobody cares to list him among the Orioles' top prospects. It certainly isn't because of his numbers. In 31 appearances, including 18 starts, between the majors and minors last year, he had a 2.64 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 9.2 strikeouts per nine innings. And he was even better in the majors than the minors. For the most part, he was a reliever for the big club, but he wasn't any less dominant in his four starts, compiling a 1.18 WHIP and 10.2 strikeouts per nine innings. With all of their starters back to full health to begin 2013, the Orioles simply don't have room in their rotation for Johnson, and as a long reliever, he's not going to pitch regularly enough to factor in Fantasy. But if an injury opens a rotation spot for him midseason, he might just pitch well enough to keep it. Nobody's calling Johnson the next Kris Medlen, but his path to this point in his career is similar. Don't let him sneak up on you in AL-only leagues. (Updated 1/9/13) |
