Orioles RP Steve Johnson doing well coming off shoulder surgery
|by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com|
|(3/17/15) Orioles reliever Steve Johnson, who underwent shoulder surgery in the offseason, has pitched fairly well in his first three spring outings. He's allowed one unearned run in three innings, while striking out six batters.
"I kept telling Wally (pitching coach Dave Wallace), 'I've seen him right and it plays.' Last thing to come is the breaking ball command and I'm hoping that happens before he leaves here. But Steve, you can tell on his face, he feels good about himself," manager Buck Showalter said.
Johnson, who is looking to secure a spot in the bullpen, dealt with a finger injury early in camp, but for the most part has been pleased with how he has performed this spring.
"Feel good. Just nice to be able to throw normal and have some of the velocity back and obviously the control," he said. "Something wasn't right throughout the last year. Got that taken care of and hoping to be back to where I was a couple of years ago and stay healthy.
"I have (to find) just a little feel on certain pitches like my curveball and that will come a little slower but my fastball feels good. I'm throwing with the velocity I normally throw at. And hopefully I am going to get stronger. Normally I'm around 87 to 91 and should be able to get higher than that during the season."
Orioles' Steve Johnson could make spring debut Friday
|by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com|
|(3/5/15) Orioles reliever Steve Johnson told reporters he chose to pitch a bullpen session on Wednesday rather than make a spring training appearance, per MASN Sports. Johnson, who is working his way back from a finger injury, took the day off on Thursday and is expected to make his 2015 spring debut Friday or Saturday.
"With the bullpen thing, I wouldn't say I rushed, but I went right into the tracking, so I felt like if I could have one more work day and get off the mound one more time before getting into a game situation that it would be better for me," Johnson said. "I just felt a little more comfortable getting one more day to work on my pitches off the mound before you go all-out in a game situation."
