"We'd like to use him just one inning so we have him the next day," manager Ron Washington told MLB.com. "Sometimes you have to push the envelope, and last night was one of those nights. Our intention is to use him for just one inning. We haven't discussed plans for constantly pitching him in multiple innings."

Scheppers has been a key piece of the bullpen this season, allowing just one earned run in 20 innings while recording three wins.

Scheppers had unofficially held that role for a while now. He's yet to allow a run this season with a 1.11 WHIP over 12 2/3 innings. 

"We’ve certainly been hoping that one day he steps up and takes charge, and he’s stepping up," Washington said. "He’s got a good arm and the key is he’s throwing strikes." 

Scheppers tossed two scoreless innings, giving up one hit. He struck out one batter during the appearance. Scheppers has yet to allow a run in 10 2/3 innings.

"The last four times he has thrown the ball well," Rangers manager Ron Washington said. "He's coming on and he's doing it at the right time ... down the stretch. Hopefully with the success he's had, his confidence will grow."

Scheppers was solid as a rookie last year with a 4.45 ERA over 39 games. He underwent surgery in October for turf toe and is back at 100 percent health after being sidelined earlier in the spring due to a strained left hamstring.

"Things are starting to feel good," Scheppers said. "My body feels good and my arm feels good. I don't know where my velocity is at, I just know the ball feels good coming out. That's all that matters."
