|Brett Jackson heads into 2014 with renewed focus |
|by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com|
(2/16/14) After a disastrous 2013 season, which included a demotion in the minors, Cubs outfield prospect Brett Jackson has a new attitude heading into 2014, per MLB.com.
"I’ve never been more excited to be back in spring training. I’ve never been more excited to be back on the field," he said. "When you’re not playing well, the game’s not fun. I wasn’t having fun last year -- I was hurt and struggling. I rediscovered that fun a little bit this offseason. I feel I’m in the best physical shape I’ve been in and the best mental state I’ve been in in a long time. I’m very confident coming into camp and am excited to be part of this new regime."
Jackson was given an offseason program by the Cubs that included improving his mental approach to the game. Jackson also said he made some slight changes to his approach at the plate.
"The changes I was trying to make last year had all the right intentions and all the right cues for me to become a better player," he said. “However, I was fighting my nature, I was fighting who I was as a natural athlete and I think that made my time at the plate a struggle. Having said that, I’m thankful for last year and I’m thankful for what happened and overcoming the injuries I had and the challenges I had at the plate and on the field. I feel the best I’ve felt moving into spring training."
|Cubs not throwing in the towel on Josh Vitters, Brett Jackson |
|by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com|
(1/19/14) Cubs infielder Josh Vitters and outfielder Brett Jackson used to be highly rated prospects, but struggles in the minors have pushed them off the radar. However, senior vice president of player development Jason McLeod said the Cubs haven't forgotten about Vitters and Jackson, who will both be in camp this spring.
"We still have belief in both of them," McLeod said, per MLB.com.
|As recently as 2012, Brett Jackson was considered one of the top prospects in baseball. He had his flaws that could potentially hold him back in the majors -- a high strikeout rate chief among them -- but he had overcome them to that point. Or at least he gave the impression he had. In the two years since, they've come back to bite him. He lost 20 points on his batting average in 2012 before bottoming out with a .210 mark in 2013 -- and in the heavy-hitting Pacific Coast League, no less. You shouldn't assume anyone with his pedigree is a lost cause, but at age 25, Jackson is running out of time to figure things out. The Cubs have a flexible enough outfield that he could potentially force his way into the lineup by season's end, but a lot has to go right for that to happen. Even in long-term keeper leagues, you can probably do better on Draft Day.
