Cubs deal former first-round pick Brett Jackson to Diamondbacks
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(8/15/14) The Cubs have traded outfielder Brett Jackson to the Diamondbacks for pitcher Blake Cooper, according to azcentral.com.

Jackson is a former first-round pick of the Cubs, but has struggled in the minors. He's hitting .210/.298/.348 over 224 at-bats in Triple-A this season. Cooper has a 3.57 ERA at Triple-A.

Cubs cut eight from major-league camp
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(3/18/14) The Cubs optioned five players to Triple-A Iowa Tuesday, including outfielder Brett Jackson, infielders Josh Vitters and Christian Villanueva and pitchers Zac Rosscup and Arodys Vizcaino.

The team also reassigned catcher Rafael Lopez, outfielder Mitch Maier and pitcher Armando Rivero to minor-league camp.

Brett Jackson heads into 2014 with renewed focus
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(2/16/14) After a disastrous 2013 season, which included a demotion in the minors, Cubs outfield prospect Brett Jackson has a new attitude heading into 2014, per MLB.com.

"I’ve never been more excited to be back in spring training. I’ve never been more excited to be back on the field," he said. "When you’re not playing well, the game’s not fun. I wasn’t having fun last year -- I was hurt and struggling. I rediscovered that fun a little bit this offseason. I feel I’m in the best physical shape I’ve been in and the best mental state I’ve been in in a long time. I’m very confident coming into camp and am excited to be part of this new regime."

Jackson was given an offseason program by the Cubs that included improving his mental approach to the game. Jackson also said he made some slight changes to his approach at the plate.

"The changes I was trying to make last year had all the right intentions and all the right cues for me to become a better player," he said. “However, I was fighting my nature, I was fighting who I was as a natural athlete and I think that made my time at the plate a struggle. Having said that, I’m thankful for last year and I’m thankful for what happened and overcoming the injuries I had and the challenges I had at the plate and on the field. I feel the best I’ve felt moving into spring training."

Cubs not throwing in the towel on Josh Vitters, Brett Jackson
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(1/19/14) Cubs infielder Josh Vitters and outfielder Brett Jackson used to be highly rated prospects, but struggles in the minors have pushed them off the radar. However, senior vice president of player development Jason McLeod said the Cubs haven't forgotten about Vitters and Jackson, who will both be in camp this spring.

"We still have belief in both of them," McLeod said, per MLB.com.

Brett Jackson, Josh Vitters won't be promoted to majors
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(9/1/13) The Cubs don't plan to promote prospects Brett Jackson and Josh Vitters, according to MLB.com. Both players were September call-ups in 2012.

"We don't have the young kids who are coming up like last year with Brett Jackson and Vitters," Cubs manager Dale Sveum said, per MLB.com. "This year, we have some older guys, some left-handed bats who are obviously in the mix for next year and we want to look at and evaluate."

Jackson and Vitters have both battled injuries and have struggled in the minors this season. Their futures will the club remain in flux.

"Things have changed a great deal with them missing so much time this year," Sveum said. "The player-development part of this year has been pretty much lost for both of them. It'll be a wait-and-see thing this winter."
