Steve Clevenger left standing in backup catcher derby

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(3/19/14) The Orioles have optioned catcher Johnny Monell to minor league camp, leaving Steve Clevenger as the lone backup to starter Matt Wieters at that position.

Monell performed well enough at the plate this spring, batting .278 with one home run and six RBI in 18 at-bats. But he was outhit by Clevenger, who boasts the same power numbers with a .545 batting average that tops the Orioles among players with more than three plate appearances.

Pair of Orioles looking to prove themselves this spring

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(2/5/14) Orioles newcomers such as second baseman Jemile Weeks and catcher Johnny Monell must show their versatility by playing multiple positions to maximize their chances of making the team out of spring training, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Weeks will compete with Ryan Flaherty for the starting job, but could earn a spot if he proves himself at shortstop and third base, where Alexi Casilla is also competing. Monell will battle Steve Clevenger for the backup role to Matt Wieters, but could also score points with Buck Showalter if he proves himself worthy at other positions.
