Cardinals award Randal Grichuk, Pete Kozma final two bench spots
|by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com|
|(3/31/15) The Cardinals informed outfielder Randal Grichuk and Pete Kozma that they have earned the final two spots on St. Louis' bench, per MLB.com.
Grichuk is hitting .256/.373/.558 with four homers and 10 RBI over 43 at-bats this spring. Kozma .429/.432/.429 with five RBI over 42 at-bats in Grapefruit League play.
"We'll find out [Grichuk's potential]," manager Mike Matheny said, per the St. Louis Post Dispatch. "I think that's how we'll go about it. I see him just as a very valuable weapon offensively, defensively, and on the bases. Just another right-handed bat to give us those options. We're going to try to give him as much work as we possibly can. Just watching what he's done this spring couldn't imagine leaving Florida without him on our club."
Cardinals' Pete Kozma draws start at second base Sunday

|(3/8/15) Cardinals shortstop Pete Kozma is starting at second base in Sunday's spring game, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Kozma spent most of last season stashed in the minor leagues as a Plan B in case something happened to starting shortstop Jhonny Peralta. He's out of options this season, and the team is looking to prepare him for a potential utility role. Manager Mike Matheny hasn't ruled out giving him work in the outfield in addition to seeing time around the infield. Kozma is also being prepared to serve as the team's emergency catcher.
Cardinals prepping Kozma, Garcia as emergency catchers in spring
|by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com|
|(2/22/15) The Cardinals want to make sure they have all their bases covered this year. That's why infielders Pete Kozma and Greg Garcia are doing drills this spring to serve as emergency catchers if the situation ever presents itself.
"I'll welcome anything," said Kozma, who may also see limited time in the outfield this spring. "I'll expect the unexpected, I guess. Be ready for anything. It doesn't matter where I play. As long as I'm on the field somewhere, I'm OK."
Kozma, who is primarily used as a shortstop, hit .304 with four runs scored in 23 plate appearances in 2014.
"I know how to call a game," Kozma said. "I can see all of Yadi's signs. Whenever he makes a mound visit, I'm right there. ... Getting back there and actually doing it, the ball will be a little different than being at the plate or seeing it. I will be able to see a lot more."
Cardinals INF Pete Kozma willing to play anywhere in 2015
|by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com|
|(1/17/15) Cardinals infielder Pete Kozma said he is willing to play anywhere next season, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
"If (manager Mike Matheny) names a position, I'm going to say, 'Yes,''' said Kozma. "I'm not going to say, 'No.'"
After serving as a starting shortstop for most of 2013, Kozma spent nearly all of his 2014 season in the minors. The club's top draft pick in 2007 hit .304 (7 for 23) in 14 big-league games. He struck out 567 times compared to 294 walks in the minor leagues.
"I've focused on trying to cut my strikeouts down and trying to get on base. Try to get my walks and my strikeouts about even," Kozma said.
