Mike Minor turns in solid outing in win over A's
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(8/18/14) Braves pitcher Mike Minor put together a solid outing Sunday night at home against the A's, allowing two earned runs on four hits with two walks and seven strikeouts in seven innings of a 4-3 victory.

With the win, Minor improved to 5-8 on the season. Over his last two starts covering 13 2/3 innings, he has allowed five earned runs. He owns a 5.16 ERA and a 1.53 WHIP over 19 starts (111 2/3 innings). His next start will come Friday at Cincinnati.
Mike Minor shows he's worth keeping
by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(8/13/14) Mike Minor's line in his return to the starting rotation Tuesday against the Dodgers wasn't the most impressive one he's ever had, but allowing three earned runs on eight hits with one walk and seven strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings was a definite step in the right direction. After all, he had a 7.33 ERA and 1.89 WHIP in his previous 10 starts, looking nothing like the breakout pitcher of a year ago.

The Braves had skipped Minor's last turn hoping to get him right, and judging by his comments after the game, he used that time wisely.

"I changed some things mechanically, with some of my grips. I thought my stuff was moving better," Minor said. "It was encouraging."

Having watched the game, I'll add that Minor had especially bad luck on batted balls, with at least two of the Dodgers' eight hits coming on popups just out of the reach of the second baseman. In the inning he gave up two of the three earned runs, the only hard-hit ball was Carl Crawford's double.

In other words, his line could have been even better than it was. Given his upside, he deserves another chance in Fantasy.

Mike Minor takes a tough loss Tuesday
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(8/12/14) Braves pitcher Mike Minor turned in a decent start, but couldn't pick up a win Tuesday.

Minor allowed three runs on eight hits over 6 2/3 innings of work. He struck out seven and walked one. Minor didn't allow any home runs during the outing, but proved to be somewhat hittable. The Dodgers were able to strike early against Minor, plating one run in the second inning. They struck again in the fifth after Minor put two men on. A ground out and a single drove in both runs. Minor left the game down one run, but the team could not mount a comeback.

With the loss, Minor fell to 4-8 on the year. He'll take on the Athletics during his next start.

Is that stashed superstar really worth the wait?
by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(8/12/14) So you're at the point, with the season winding down, where you have to win at all costs. Seems straightforward enough. The only problem is your bench is overflowing with players you can't actually use -- ones that are injured but too valuable to drop, like Brett Lawrie, Brandon Phillips, Adam Eaton, Michael Wacha, Paul Goldschmidt, Yadier Molina, Ryan Zimmerman, Joey Votto, Carlos Gonzalez or Masahiro Tanaka.

Or maybe your albatross isn't injured but just doesn't inspire much confidence right now, like Pedro Alvarez, Justin Verlander or Mike Minor.

I've got news for you: This late in the year, when winning is paramount, you can consider dropping them. Granted, it shouldn't be the goal because the competition can only benefit from whatever you forfeit, but sometimes, it's your only choice.

I break it down player-by-player in my latest post to the Fantasy Baseball Today blog, so if you could a little assistance with that season-shifting dilemma, be sure to check out.

Mike Minor still worth stashing
by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(8/4/14) There's no way around it: Mike Minor has been terrible in 17 starts since returning from a shoulder injury. In his last 10 especially, he's known nothing but misery, compiling a 7.33 ERA and 1.89 WHIP.

You know when else he was terrible? His first 15 starts in 2012, when he compiled a 6.20 ERA and 1.47 WHIP. You know how he did in his final 15 starts that year? Try a 2.21 and 0.86 WHIP.

That midseason breakthrough led to his 2013 breakout, which led Fantasy owners to believe he was a safe bet coming into 2014. So what's changed since then? Well, his shoulder has acted up, and he's stunk.

But unless the shoulder is the source of his struggles -- which is certainly plausible but not my preferred theory given his steady velocity from one year to the next -- we have little reason to believe his struggles now are any different from his struggles in 2012, meaning they have less to do with health or ability than mechanics and confidence.

What Minor needs more than anything right now is the time to regroup and research, and he has it with the Braves skipping his next start. I don't know what comes next, but I'm willing to wait and find out.
