Pirates activate Chris Stewart, send down Tony Sanchez

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(4/17/15) The Pirates recalled catcher Chris Stewart from his rehab assignment and reinstated him from the 15-day disabled list prior to Friday's game against Milwaukee, per the team's official website. Tony Sanchez was optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis to clear roster space for Stewart's arrival.

Stewart injured his hamstring on March 9, which caused him to start the year on the DL. He batted .333 (6 for 18) with two RBI in five total rehab games between Double-A Altoona and Triple-A Indianapolis.

Pirates' Tony Sanchez getting more comfortable in second start

by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com
(4/13/15) Pirates catcher Tony Sanchez went 3 for 4 in Sunday's 10-2 win over the Brewers. Sanchez, who went 0 for 3 with three strikeouts in his first start, felt a lot stronger Sunday, reports the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

"I felt good, a lot better than Cincinnati," Sanchez said. "Got the first-game jitters out of the way and got back to what I was doing in spring training. That's staying in the big part of the field and hunting fastballs in the spot that I'm looking for."

Manager Clint Hurdle wants Sanchez to stay calm at the plate.

"He needs to stay within himself," Hurdle said. "I think his adrenaline outplayed him a little bit the last start. Today he calmed things down in the batter's box. He's done a really solid job behind the plate, both games."

Sanchez is now hitting .375 in eight at-bats this season.

Rodrigues, Kang, Sanchez and Hart to start season with Pirates

by Jason Butt | CBSSports.com
(3/20/15) Pirates manager Clint Hurdle revealed four players that will open the 2015 season on the 25-man roster.

Those, via the Pittsburgh Post Gazette, are Sean Rodriguez, Jung Ho Kang, Tony Sanchez and Corey Hart

"Sean Rodriguez is on the club,“ Hurdle said. ”[Jung Ho] Kang is on the club. Tony Sanchez is on the club, based on the situation that has kind of happened with Chris Stewart. ... Corey Hart is on the club. We have the one open set."

Pirates C Tony Sanchez could break camp on 25-man roster

by Jason Butt | CBSSports.com
(3/19/15) Chris Stewart's pain could once again be Tony Sanchez's benefit.

With Stewart's hamstring injury keeping him out for at least two more weeks, Sanchez will likely make the Pirates' Opening Day Roster. Also helping Sanchez is the fact he's had a teriffic spring, batting .526 with a 1.518 OPS.

"It's way too early to tell if a DL assignment will be required [for Stewart]," Pirates general manager Neal Huntington said. "The nice part is, Sanchez has had a great camp on all sides of the game, and if Chris is not ready, we feel strongly about having somebody who can step in."

A year ago, Stewart had a knee injury that allowed Sanchez to break camp on the 25-man roster as one of the Pirates' catchers. But Stewart did have minor knee surgery and returned in only one month.

Even so, the Pirates could once again be relying on Sanchez on the roster in April.

"Our focus is on continuing to help Sanchez be ready, if needed," Huntington summed up. "And if [Stewart] is ready to go, we'll have a lot of catching depth."

Pirates' Stewart could be out two more weeks due to injury

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(3/19/15) Pirates catcher Chris Stewart is expected to miss two weeks with a sore hamstring, which could put his status for Opening Day in jeopardy, per the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. If Stewart begins the season on the disabled list, catcher Tony Sanchez would likely take his spot on the roster.

When healthy, Stewart -- who has been sidelined since March 9 -- is expected to split catcher duties with Francisco Cervelli. Stewart is just 1 for 5 (.200) in three spring games.
