Kyle Gibson strikes out eight in win vs. Diamondbacks
|by R.J. White | CBSSports.com|
|(9/23/14) Twins pitcher Kyle Gibson earned a win Tuesday, giving up just one earned run on seven hits in seven innings and striking out eight in his team's 6-3 victory over the Diamondbacks.
Gibson (13-11) was handed a 3-0 lead after two innings and protected it by surrendering just an RBI single in the fourth. It's his first quality start sinc Aug. 13 and the first time he didn't walk a batter since Aug. 3. Gibson owns a 4.50 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 101:54 K:BB ratio in 172 innings. He's scheduled to face the Tigers in the season finale Sunday.
Kyle Gibson wins despite rough start

|(9/17/14) Twins pitcher Kyle Gibson had a rough start Wednesday against the Tigers.
Gibson allowed four runs on seven hits over six innings. He struck out three and walked three during the outing. Gobson got himself in trouble immediately. After quickly getting two outs in the first, Gibson allowed a single, walk and two straight run-scoring singles. He had similar struggles in the second inning. With two outs, Gibson gave up a run-scoring single and a run-scoring double during the inning. He would settle in at that point, tossing four straight scoreless innings before leaving the game.
Despite the poor performance, Gibson picked up a win. He improved to 12-11. Gibson will take on the Diamondbacks in his next start.
Indians blast Kyle Gibson off the mound Thursday
|by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com|
|(9/11/14) Twins right-hander Kyle Gibson entered his Thursday start in Cleveland having allowed just nine home runs in 27 outings. When he gave up two before retiring an out in the second inning it was obvious he wasn't going to stick around for very long.
Gibson was indeed removed after the third and finished having given up seven runs on seven hits with two walks and no strikeouts. He has not won since Aug. 13 as his ERA has skyrocketed to 4.58, its highest point since May 23. Gibson, who gave up a 442-foot shot to Carlos Santana in the first and solo job to Yan Gomes in the second, will attempt to bounce back Tuesday against Detroit.
Kyle Gibson settles for no-decision

|(9/5/14) Twins starting pitcher Kyle Gibson wasn't a factor into the decision Thursday night at home against the Angels. He allowed four runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out one over seven innings of work.|
Of his 95 pitches, 60 were strikes. Gibson owns a 4.27 ERA and a 1.29 WHIP over 27 starts (156 innings). His next start will come Wednesday at Cleveland.
Kyle Gibson sees boost in strikeout rate
|by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com|
|(8/31/14) Twins starting pitcher Kyle Gibson struck out six batters Saturday at Baltimore, which is the fourth time in his last seven starts he had at least five strikeouts. He accomplished that feat just twice in his first 19 appearances.
Gibson's strikeout rate has increased to 7.34 K/9 over his last seven starts.
"Having more consistency to my release point and the shape of my pitches was something that added to that tonight," Gibson said Saturday, per the Pioneer Press. "I’ve been really working on staying on line, and what that does is it allows all the pitches to come out of my hand on relatively the same trajectory toward home plate and the same arm slot. When you can do that, it takes the hitter a little bit longer to be able to recognize that."
2015 Draft Prep: 10-team, AL-only H2H mock
As pitchers and catchers report, we go deeper with a 10-team AL-only H2H mock draft. Al Melchior highlights trends like where top rookies like Rusney Castillo slot.
|2014 summary: Kyle Gibson fits the mold of a Twins pitch-to-contact starter, and thanks to an effective sinker, that approach worked well for him through the first three months of his first full season. Gibson entered July with a 7-6 record, a 3.77 ERA and six starts that lasted at least seven innings. In the dog days, Gibson became more hittable, and he finished with a 4.47 ERA and an average of 5.8 innings per start.|
Playing time status: Gibson is expected to begin the season in the Twins' rotation.
2015 outlook: While Gibson did a great job of preventing extra-base hits, he wasn't as successful at missing bats as he had been in the minors. If he can make some gains as a strikeout pitcher, Gibson could be viable in standard mixed leagues. Until that happens, though, he is more of a late-rounder in deeper mixed leagues.
