Rockies pitcher Tyler Matzek working on control issues

by Sean d'Oliveira | CBSSports.com
(6/29/15) The Rockies sent pitcher Tyler Matzek home to deal with his control issues, reports MLB.com.

"We've been working so hard with him, we've gone through different steps to the point where we feel like he needs a blow," Rockies director of pitching operations Mark Wiley said Monday. "It's not a monster thing. We're just giving him some time off to regroup while we decide where we want to go and how we're going to attack it from here."

Matzek walked five and hit a batter during a start at Class A last week.

"We're working to get him to where the mechanical part of his game and the mental part of his game are working together," Wiley said. "I've had other guys in the past that we've done the same thing with. Sometimes you put so much on yourself because you're working so hard to come back that you need to get away."

Rockies SP Tyler Matzek ready to return to minor-league games

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(6/16/15) Rockies starting pitcher Tyler Matzek, who was demoted to the minors in May, is ready to pitch in a game again since being shut down after his only start for Triple-A Albuquerque on May 13. The left-hander will pitch this week for short-season Class A Boise, per MLB.com.

"He's been working hard, and the goal is to work with him and get him back to the major-league level as quickly as we can," Rockies player development director Zach Wilson said.

Rockies' Matzek not ready to return to game action at Triple-A

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(5/27/15) The Rockies don't have a timetable for starting pitcher Tyler Matzek to return to game action for Triple-A Albuquerque, per MLB.com. For now, he continues to work with the coaching staff on fundamentals.

"I'm not going to get into it too much, but a lot of it is getting Tyler back to the basics on all fronts, and once he's able to simplify things in those ways it'll get him back on a path for success," Rockies player development director Zach Wilson said. "Tyler has had success before. He's also had to fight through ups and downs.

"Any professional athlete is going to run into hurdles. But because of the nature of Tyler Matzek, he's going to be able to get through it. Nobody's worried about it. Certainly he's not."

Rockies pitcher Tyler Matzek getting skipped in Triple-A rotation

by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com
(5/18/15) Rockies pitcher Tyler Matzek will not make his scheduled start on Monday for Triple-A Albuquerque, manager Walt Weiss said per the Denver Post.

"We're taking him out of competition for a bit. He needs to work on some things," Weiss said.

Matzek has been in free fall as of late. In his last start for Triple-A, Matzek lasted just one inning, allowing seven runs with seven walks and one hit batsman. Before being optioned, Matzek was 2-1 with a 4.09 ERA in 22 innings of work with the Rockies.

"This gives him a chance to focus on other things, outside of trying to win a baseball game, and sometimes there are situations where you have to take a break from that type of competitive environment," director of player development Zach Wilson said. "This is a minor thing for him. It's not a significant worry.

Rockies option LHP Tyler Matzek to Triple-A, recall C/1B Rosario

by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(5/8/15) The Rockies have optioned left-hander pitcher Tyler Matzek to Triple-A Albuquerque on Friday, the team announced. Matzek made five starts this season for Colorado, going 2-1 with a 4.09 ERA in 22 innings. His 15:19 K:BB ratio is rather alarming. He struggled in his most recent start on Wednesday. He gave up four earned runs while walking six with just two strikeouts in two innings against the Diamondbacks.

To fill his roster spot, the Rockies recalled catcher/first baseman Wilin Rosario from Triple-A. Rosario was hitting well this season before his surprising demotion, batting .357 (5 for 14) in his first 10 games. He's been raking in Albuquerque as well, sporting a .343/.361/.457 batting line in nine games.
