Weiss: Refining changeup could lead to 'next step' for Rockies' Matzek

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(2/10/15) When Rockies starting pitcher Tyler Matzek first made it to the majors last season, like many rookie pitchers he endured his struggles. The left-hander was 2-9 with a 5.38 ERA through his first 14 MLB starts.

But as the season wound down, something clicked for the former top-100 prospect. He went 4-2 with a 1.55 ERA over his last six starts.

"I was trying to go after hitters' weaknesses," Matzek said of his initial struggles, per The Denver Post. "But then I sat down with Mac (catcher Michael McKenry) and he said: 'You have to go after your strengths. Don't worry about scouting too much. Sure, know about the opposing hitters, but attack them with your own strengths.' Once I started figuring that out, I think I really turned the page and got a lot better."

Although Matzek has a better handle of how to pitch to major-league batters, the learning is not over. His offseason mission has been to work on improving his changeup.

"We talked to Tyler about that when he was at the minor-league level, the idea that his changeup was a little too firm," manager Walt Weiss said. "It will be a really, really good pitch for him if he take a few ticks off the velocity. His arm motion is already good; it looks just like his fastball. He already has a put-away breaking ball and a 'plus fastball.' He can be a guy that can have three plus pitches. I think that's the next step."

Tyler Matzek pegged with tough-luck loss

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(9/23/14) Rockies pitcher Tyler Matzek was pegged with a tough-luck loss Monday night in San Diego, dropping to 6-11 on the year. He allowed one run on four hits and three walks while striking out eight over six innings of work.

Over his last five starts covering 33 2/3 innings, Matzek has allowed five earned runs. His season comes to an end with a 4.05 ERA and a 1.39 WHIP over 117 2/3 innings of work. He struck out 91 and walked 44 over that span.

Tyler Matzek strikes out six in win vs. Dodgers

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(9/16/14) Rockies pitcher Tyler Matzek earned a win Tuesday, giving up two earned runs on 11 hits and one walk in 5 1/3 innings while striking out six in his team's 10-4 victory over the Dodgers.

While the opposing starter allowed five runs on only four hits, Matzek (6-10) was able to scatter 11 hits while only allowing a two-run double in the sixth inning while already up 5-0. He's held the opposition to two earned runs or less in five straight starts and now owns a 4.19 ERA and 83:41 K:BB ratio in 111 2/3 innings. Matzek is scheduled to face the Diamondbacks Sunday.

Tyler Matzek drops his 10th game Wednesday

by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(9/10/14) Rockies pitcher Tyler Matzek earned his 10th loss Wednesday against the Mets.

Matzek allowed two runs on four hits over 6 1/3 innings. He struck out seven and walked four during the outing. Matzek only had two bad innings. After a walk in the second, he allowed a run-scoring triple. That didn't seem to faze him, as Matzek was then solid over the next four innings. He fell into trouble again in the seventh. After loading the bases with one out during the frame, Matzek was replaced. A sac fly brought in another run which was charged to Matzek.

With the loss, Matzek dropped to 5-10. He'll take on the Dodgers in his next start.

Tyler Matzek blanks Padres in first complete game

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(9/5/14) Rockies pitcher Tyler Matzek extended his winning streak to three games by tossing an absolute gem in a 3-0 win over the Padres Friday.

Matzek twirled the first complete game of his career, and he did it in shutout fashion. He scattered just three hits and a walk over nine innings, while striking out six batters. He finished the complete game on 103 pitches, his second 100-pitch outing in a row.

Matzek got off to a rough start as he fell to 2-9 with a 5.38 ERA through his first 13 starts, but he has found his groove since. He has allowed just two runs on 14 hits over 23 innings during his three-game winning streak. He will try to keep rolling when he takes on the Mets Wednesday.
