Rockies' Tyler Matzek allows two earned runs in four innings
|by R.J. White | CBSSports.com|
|(3/31/15) Rockies pitcher Tyler Matzek surrendered two earned runs on four hits and two walks in four innings while striking out two in Tuesday's 4-3 loss to the Giants.
"I made a few mistakes with the slider, but that's a day-to-day kind of thing," Matzek said after the outing, per MLB.com. "I don't feel it's a tendency or anything. The changeup is pretty good, the fastball I was able to move it around in the zone and the curveball was where it always is."
It was the last Cactus League start of the spring for Matzek, who has posted a 6.00 ERA and 9:6 K:BB ratio in 12 innings. The team announced Tuesday that Matzek will start the team's home opener April 10 against the Cubs, the Denver Post reports.
"I’m excited. It’s going to be a great game. It’s a huge opportunity," Matzek said. "Not many guys can say they started a home-opener. I just want to start the season off at home with a 'W.' I’ll give it my all."
Rockies pitcher Tyler Matzek battles control issues Wednesday

|(3/18/15) Rockies pitcher Tyler Matzek threw 3 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on three hits. The young pitcher also hit two batters and walked one. He felt he was pressing a bit, reports MLB.com.
"I was just rushing a little bit, especially in that third inning," Matzek said. "I wasn't getting extension on that slider, threw it up and got hurt a couple of times. I've got to stay back and really extend on that fastball and slider."
Weiss: Refining changeup could lead to 'next step' for Rockies' Matzek
|by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com|
|(2/10/15) When Rockies starting pitcher Tyler Matzek first made it to the majors last season, like many rookie pitchers he endured his struggles. The left-hander was 2-9 with a 5.38 ERA through his first 14 MLB starts.
But as the season wound down, something clicked for the former top-100 prospect. He went 4-2 with a 1.55 ERA over his last six starts.
"I was trying to go after hitters' weaknesses," Matzek said of his initial struggles, per The Denver Post. "But then I sat down with Mac (catcher Michael McKenry) and he said: 'You have to go after your strengths. Don't worry about scouting too much. Sure, know about the opposing hitters, but attack them with your own strengths.' Once I started figuring that out, I think I really turned the page and got a lot better."
Although Matzek has a better handle of how to pitch to major-league batters, the learning is not over. His offseason mission has been to work on improving his changeup.
"We talked to Tyler about that when he was at the minor-league level, the idea that his changeup was a little too firm," manager Walt Weiss said. "It will be a really, really good pitch for him if he take a few ticks off the velocity. His arm motion is already good; it looks just like his fastball. He already has a put-away breaking ball and a 'plus fastball.' He can be a guy that can have three plus pitches. I think that's the next step."
Tyler Matzek pegged with tough-luck loss
|by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com|
|(9/23/14) Rockies pitcher Tyler Matzek was pegged with a tough-luck loss Monday night in San Diego, dropping to 6-11 on the year. He allowed one run on four hits and three walks while striking out eight over six innings of work.
Over his last five starts covering 33 2/3 innings, Matzek has allowed five earned runs. His season comes to an end with a 4.05 ERA and a 1.39 WHIP over 117 2/3 innings of work. He struck out 91 and walked 44 over that span.
Tyler Matzek strikes out six in win vs. Dodgers
|by R.J. White | CBSSports.com|
|(9/16/14) Rockies pitcher Tyler Matzek earned a win Tuesday, giving up two earned runs on 11 hits and one walk in 5 1/3 innings while striking out six in his team's 10-4 victory over the Dodgers.
While the opposing starter allowed five runs on only four hits, Matzek (6-10) was able to scatter 11 hits while only allowing a two-run double in the sixth inning while already up 5-0. He's held the opposition to two earned runs or less in five straight starts and now owns a 4.19 ERA and 83:41 K:BB ratio in 111 2/3 innings. Matzek is scheduled to face the Diamondbacks Sunday.
|2014 Summary: Former first-round pick Tyler Matzek made his major league debut in June, and initially, his numbers looked as unimpressive as his minor league stats had been. Matzek struggled with control and owned a 5.38 ERA and 1.52 WHIP through his first 14 appearances for the Rockies, but beginning with an Aug. 25 start at the Giants, he tried something different. The lefty started throwing his fastball less and his slider and changeup more. The result was vastly improved control and a higher ground ball rate, as he turned in a 4-2 record, 1.55 ERA and 1.16 WHIP over his final six starts.|
Playing time status: Matzek's strong finish should give him consideration for a rotation spot this spring. Between the majors and minors, he pitched 184 1/3 innings last season, so an innings cap seems unlikely.
2015 Outlook: It's risky to draft Matzek with the expectation that he can maintain close to what he did late last season for all of 2015. That upside, however, does make him worth a late-round flier in deeper mixed leagues.
