(4/24/14) Blue Jays second baseman Ryan Goins went 1 for 2 with a walk, two runs and his first home run of the season in his team's 10-8 loss to the Orioles Wednesday.
Wednesday's game wa a home-run barrage, with the two teams combining for seven of them. Goins' home run was just his second extra-base hit and eighth hit overall this season. He has hit .154/.214/.231 in 52 at-bats.

(4/11/14) Both Blue Jays competing for the starting second base job will play Friday night in Baltimore. Ryan Goins will man that position with Maicer Izturis playing short instead of Jonathan Diaz.
Izturis and Goins have been going in opposite directions at the plate. The former is batting .385 this season while the latter has just one hit in 19 at-bats.

(4/11/14) Maicer Izturis has made four straight starts for the Blue Jays at second base, but John Gibbons has declined to name him the full-time starter ahead of struggling Ryan Goins.
Izturis boasts a .455 batting average while Goins has just one hit in 19 at-bats this season. But Gibbons believes the latter is a better all-around fielder and refuses to commit to Izturis.
"I'm not ready to stay that," Gibbons told the Toronto Sun. "Izturis gives you some offense and some defense. Goins is a defensive specialist. We think he's going to hit enough. He's off to a slow start but I expect him to improve on that. But right now we're playing the hot hand, the guy that's swinging the bat."
Gibbons added that he might have considered continuing to play Goins if others in the lineup were hitting better.
|Ryan Goins won't be sitting regularly vs. left-handed pitchers |
|by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com|
(3/31/14) Although Ryan Goins is the Blue Jays' starting second baseman, he was not in the starting lineup Monday against the Rays, replaced by Maicer Izturis in the season opener.
Manager John Gibbons said he went with Izturis because Rays starting pitcher David Price is tough on lefties, but added Goins sitting against left-handed starters won't be a regular occurrence.
"It's not an easy call because you want the kid's defense," Gibbons said of sitting Goins.
|Ryan Goins won't be a major source of speed or power going forward, but he did display some major league skill in a 34-game late-season stint with the Blue Jays in 2013. The 26-year-old hit .252, with two home runs and five doubles over 199 at-bats. But the Blue Jays have a stacked roster already, and while Goins appears to be the favorite for the starting second base job, the presence of Maicer Izturis and even Brett Lawrie (although the Blue Jays have said his second base experiment is over) muddle the picture a bit. Even if he finds his way into the starting role, Goins -- who never went over seven home runs or 15 steals in a minor league season -- won't have much upside value outside of his middle infield eligibility. He's best left to AL-only formats.
