| Xavier Avery got a chance to contribute in the majors last summer, collecting 94 at-bats between four stints. His arrival had more to do with the Orioles' lack of outfield depth than his progression in the minors, though. The former football star, who was recruited to play running back at the University of Georgia, is still a work in progress both at the plate and on the base paths, which explains why he hit.236 with a .686 OPS and stole 22 bases in 29 opportunities at Triple-A Norfolk last year. At age 23, he's getting to the point where he needs to begin making serious strides to have a chance at becoming a major-league regular. The Orioles haven't added much depth to their outfield, so if another Nate McLouth slump or Nolan Reimold injury forces Avery back to the majors before he's ready, he could get pigeonholed as a one-dimensional reserve. If you're looking for steals late in an AL-only draft, chances are you can do better than Avery, though he does have some long-term appeal as long as he isn't rushed. (Updated 1/9/13) |
