| Jerry Sands suspended at Triple-A |

(4/17/13) Pirates outfielder Jerry Sands has been suspended one game for entering the stands during a game with Triple-A Indianapolis. The incident happened in Toledo.
"Last night in Toledo, there was a verbal dispute between a fan and Jerry Sands, during which Jerry briefly entered into the stands," Pirates general manager Neal Huntington said in a statement Wednesday. "The situation was quickly resolved without further incident as the fan was ejected for his actions."
Sands is batting .186 with three RBI in 11 games at Triple-A.

(12/26/12) Just four months after being traded by the Dodgers to the Red Sox, outfielder Jerry Sands has returned to the National League, getting dealt to the Pirates on Wednesday as part of a six-player deal. The Red Sox traded Sands, reliever Mark Melancon, infielder Ivan De Jesus and pitching prospect Stolmy Pimentel to Pittsburgh in exchange for reliever Joel Hanrahan and second baseman Brock Holt. Sands appeared in nine games for the Dodgers in 2012, but he spent most of the season at Triple-A Albuquerque, where he hit .296 with 26 home runs and 107 RBI.

| Jerry Sands took a ride on the Big Trade carousel in 2012, going to the Red Sox in the deadline blockbuster trade with the Dodgers, then being shipped off to the Pirates in the deal that sent Joel Hanrahan to Boston. Sands projects as a bench player, at best, for the Pirates, who are stocked with young outfield talent and had acquired Gaby Sanchez to challenge Garrett Jones (who can also play the outfield) at first base. In short, Sands has several roadblocks to playing time. While he has a ton of power (26 or more home runs in each of the last three minor league seasons) and a solid minor league career average (.289 in five seasons), Sands is in a tough situation and should be left to NL keeper leagues for now.
