Fantasy Analysis
Sands spent some time with Los Angeles last season, but was one of the final cuts on the team during spring training. The 24-year-old is still considered a quality prospect and ripped 15 extra-base hits, including seven homers, in 36 games with Albuquerque this year. Fantasy owners in NL-only formats should consider him a decent injury replacement as he could also see time at first base for the Dodgers. (Updated 05/15/2012).
05/22/2012 01:20 Dodgers cruise past Diamondbacks
Matt Treanor, Andre Ethier and James Loney homered to power Chris Capuano to his sixth victory, and the Los Angeles Dodgers won their fifth straight by beating the Arizona Diamondbacks 6-1 on Monday night.
Jerry Sands entered 2011 as the Dodgers' best power-hitting prospect in the upper minors, but he faltered in his first call-up to the majors. After hitting .200 through his first 125 at-bats, Sands was sent back to Triple-A Albuquerque, but he got a second chance when rosters expanded in September. Finishing the season filling in for Andre Ethier in right field, Sands hit a scorching .342 with two homers and five doubles in 73 at-bats. Despite his strong finish, Sands will start 2012 back at Albuquerque, but he could easily be back later in the season. At the very least, Sands is worth a slot in long-term keeper leagues, and he would also be worth a look in deeper mixed leagues and NL-only formats as a waiver pickup, should he be recalled.
