| Willie Bloomquist nearing rehab stint |

(5/14/13) Diamondbacks infielder Willie Bloomquist (oblique) is expected to begin playing games at extended spring training on Thursday, MLB.com reports. After playing there for a couple of days, the club will will determine the minor league affiliate and length of time for his rehab assignment.
"He's been out since the beginning of the season so he needs to play some baseball, definitely," manager Kirk Gibson said Tuesday. "To get up to speed, No. 1, and the other part is just to make sure he's healthy to play some sustained games."

(5/9/13) Diamondbacks infielder Willie Bloomquist has gone back to swinging only in batting practice after suffering a minor setback in his first at-bat during an extend spring training game last week.
"I hadn't taken a swing with that intensity before and I wasn't ready for that type of intensity," Bloomquist said. "It was just something to let me know that I'm not ready. It wasn't a grab or pull, just a little bit of pain."
Bloomquist has yet to play this season since straining his oblique in the final days of spring training. The 35-year-old has shown some frustration as his rehab process has lasted longer than he had expected.
"I was expecting to be back by now but I've talked to guys who've had similar injuries and they said it took them seven, eight, nine weeks before it felt right again," Bloomquist said. "Does it make me feel better? No, but it lets me know I'm at least not behind schedule."

(5/9/13) Diamondbacks infielder Willie Bloomquist was shut down over the weekend after suffering a “little setback” in his recovery from an oblique strain, the Arizona Republic reports.
He has since resumed taking batting practice.
"We slowed him down a little bit," manager Kirk Gibson said Wednesday.

(5/1/13) Diamondbacks infielder Willie Bloomquist has been limited to playing defense and bunting during extended spring games because of his oblique strain. However, he said he's planning to swing a bat in a game Thursday, according to The Arizona Republic.
"I’m just about there, if not there, physically," he said. "Now it’s just a matter of getting back in baseball shape. Getting my timing, getting my swing, getting my approach and all that stuff."

(4/26/13) Diamondbacks shortstop Willie Bloomquist took batting practice Thursday for the first time since suffering a strained right oblique in spring training, the Arizona Republic reports. Bloomquist also played three innings during an extended spring training game, but there is no immediate timetable for his return.
"He's getting closer, but he's got a ways to go," manager Kirk Gibson said.

| Willie Bloomquist will enter 2013 with shortstop eligibility, but no real clear path to playing time with the Diamondbacks. While he picked up at-bats in place of an injured Stephen Drew in the past, he also brought with him a lot of speed. But in 2012, Bloomquist stole just seven bases -- and was caught stealing 10 times -- in 80 games. This was down from 20 steals in 2011 over 97 games. While his average jumped to a career-high .302 (not counting a 12-game stint in 2002 when he hit .455), Bloomquist looks like he'll get about 250-300 at-bats in 2013. And with his steals totals dropping, the 35-year-old is best left for the waiver wires of NL-only formats. (Updated 12/4/12) |
