Giants pitcher Ryan Vogelsong tagged for six runs in start Tuesday
|by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com|
|(3/25/15) Giants pitcher Ryan Vogelsong gave up six runs on six hits, including two home runs in 4 2/3 innings against the Indians Tuesday.
Vogelsong, who is competing for a spot in the starting rotation, added two strikeouts and one walk in the outing.
"My tempo was a little off, and it was weird because I came out of the bullpen right where I wanted to be," said Vogelsong, who observed that he "pulled" too many pitches across home plate, making them more hittable.
Giants' Ryan Vogelsong delivers best spring outing Thursday

|(3/19/15) Giants pitcher Ryan Vogelsong took a liner off his shin in the first inning of Thursday's start but remained in and completed his best outing of the spring, finishing with two hits and two walks allowed in 4 2/3 scoreless innings as well as four strikeouts.
"I love to compete. That's why I didn't come out of the game today," Vogelsong said after the outing, per MLB.com. "I want to compete and coming over here and facing two hitters doesn't get me ready for April 6."
Competing for a spot in the rotation this spring, Vogelsong entered play Thursday with a 9.39 ERA in 7 2/3 innings over three appearances.
"The other night against Arizona I thought I threw well from my arm side, but my glove side I wasn't really happy with that," said Vogelsong, referring to throwing inside to lefty hitters. "But today, that's where I want to be when the season starts. The breaking ball is still half and half, but it's better than it was five days ago."
Cubs' Kyle Schwarber hits grand slam on Thursday
|by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com|
|(3/5/15) Cubs prospect Kyle Schwarber belted a grand slam on Thursday against the Giants.
Schwarber didn't wait long, knocking in all four runs in the second inning. On the fourth pitch of the at-bat, Schwarber clobbered a pitch from Ryan Vogelsong, sending it out to right field. The 22-year-old is expected to begin the season in the minors, but is one of the team's top prospects. While he may not receive a promotion until late in the season, Schwarber could draw interest on the trade market if the Cubs decide to go all in at the deadline.
Giants' Ryan Vogelsong happy after first spring outing
|by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com|
|(3/5/15) Giants pitcher Ryan Vogelsong was satisfied after his first outing of the spring, according to MLB.com.
"All of my pitches are close to being where I want them already, so from that standpoint it was good," Vogelsong said. "Just [need to] work on the mental side a little bit."
Vogelsong had an iffy start. He was able to get through the first inning quickly, but allowed four runs in the second. Vogelsong explained that he lost his focus during the inning. "I just lost my focus a little bit, just got in the stretch and started rushing a little bit, just never slowed myself down."
The 37-year-old posted a 4.00 ERA over 184 2/3 innings last season. He's expected to open the year in the Giants bullpen.
Giants' Jake Peavy to start Wednesday for Giants
|by Jason Butt | CBSSports.com|
|(3/1/15) Following Madison Bumgarner's exhibition start on Tuesday, the Giants will go with Jake Peavy to start Wednesday's Cactus League game against the Athletics, manager Bruce Bochy announced via MLB.com.
Ryan Vogelsong will pitch Thursday against the Cubs and Yusmeiro Petit will go Friday against the Rangers.
|2014 Summary: While Ryan Vogelsong rebounded from a dismal 2013 season, he didn't exactly tear it up in 2014. His strikeout, walk and home run rates were not markedly different from the ones he posted in his first two season with the Giants, but he didn't enjoy the same level of success this time around. In those years, Vogelsong benefitted from above-average strand rates, but he regressed to a 71 percent rate last year. Without a high strand rate, Vogelsong's mediocre peripherals resulted in an 8-13 record and a 4.00 ERA.|
Playing time status: After an underwhelming season, Vogelsong may not be in high demand on the free agent market, but he should find work as a starter.
2015 Outlook: At 37, Vogelsong is not a strong candidate for a rebound, and a repeat of his 2014 season won't cut it in most mixed leagues. Only owners in league-specific formats should target Vogelsong on Draft Day.
