Preseason Outlook

Hamilton was the inspirational story of 2008, coming back from addiction and a near-death spiral to hit .304 with 32 home runs and 100 RBI in his first year as a full-time starter. It was both a shock and, at the same time, just the way things should be for the former No. 1 overall pick whose natural ability became abundantly clear when he hit 28 home runs in the first round of the Home Run Derby. But that natural ability wasn't enough for Hamilton last year. He missed 73 games with a strained oblique, a sports hernia and a pinched nerve in his back and couldn't muster the same power when healthy, assuming he ever was. Most likely, the injuries deserve the blame for his regression -- his 28 years of age and all-too-natural swing say so -- but you can't help but wonder, as dramatically as his life has changed over the last couple years, if Hamilton had trouble filling his own shoes. That relapse last January couldn't have helped. Hamilton has the potential to perform like the top outfielder in Fantasy, but with the renewed uncertainty, you wouldn't want to draft him as more than your No. 2. (Updated 1/13/10)
