(6/6/14) The Orioles announced Friday that pitcher Johan Santana has suffered a torn Achilles tendon, and is out for the year.
Santana suffered the injury while fielding a ball during extended spring training earlier in the day, and an MRI confirmed the severity of the tear Friday. The extent of the rehabilitation from the injury will extend beyond this season, and Executive Vice President of Baseball Operations Dan Duquette told the Baltimore Sun he will not pitch for the Orioles this season.
Santana has been working his way back from a shoulder injury that kept him out of the majors all last season. At this point, his future as a professional pitcher is very much in doubt.

Santana, who has been signed by the Orioles, is supposed to join their rotation in about two weeks. That date could be pushed back due to the latest injury. He has nearly recovered from shoulder surgery.

(6/4/14) Orioles starter Johan Santana is set to make an extended spring training start Friday, where he is scheduled to throw 75 pitches. After that, he could begin working in minor-league games, according to MASNSports.com.
Santana could report to Triple-A Norfolk following Saturday's outing, for the official start of a minor-league rehab assignment. Assuming he does not suffer a setback, Santana might be in the rotation by the end of June.
|Johan Santana projected to return June 19 |

(6/3/14) The Orioles are projecting pitcher Johan Santana to be activated from the disabled list June 19, masnsports.com reports.
Santana has not pitched in the majors since 2012 and is currently recovering from shoulder surgery. He'll likely pitch in a few rehab outings before making his return. The team is considering moving to a six-man rotation once Santana is ready.
|Johan Santana was on track to be the Mets' opening-day starter in 2013, but he developed shoulder problems early in spring training and before we could blink the veteran left-hander underwent season-ending shoulder surgery in early April. It was his second shoulder surgery in three years. Santana returned from the same injury in 2012 to go 6-9 with a 4.85 ERA in 21 starts. However, he pitched really well initially coming off the injury, going 3-2 with a 2.38 ERA in his first 11 starts, which included a no-hitter in his 11th start against the Cardinals. But after throwing 134 pitches in the no-hitter, it started to unravel for Santana, who went 3-7 with an 8.27 ERA over his next 10 starts before being shut down with a back injury. He's simply not what he used to be, which was a Fantasy ace. He's coming off a second major shoulder surgery and is doing so in his mid-30s. Unless he has a stellar spring, Santana is shaping up to be more of a single-league Fantasy option on Draft Day, if he lands a job in a major-league rotation.
