Preseason Outlook

The days of Zito being considered a potential 300-game winner look like a decade ago and he remains one of the biggest free-agent busts in major league history. He is the rare case of a successful major league starter that regressed once in the National League, particularly surprising because the NL West is such a pitcher-friendly division. With that said, he wasn't completely worthless last year for the Giants and Fantasy owners in deeper leagues. He managed to get his ERA and WHIP closer to his career norms, which are our basis for the optimistic projections we have for him this season. The Giants figure to be a candidate to contend this season and Zito isn't a bad back-end starter on a contender -- even if he certainly is the most overpaid. Back-end starters on contenders generally prove to be Fantasy sleepers and Zito is a decent pick ahead of the unknowns among starting pitchers. (Updated 1/13/10)
