Preseason Outlook

As much as you might want to write off Furcal for good after his return from back surgery ended up a flop, you can't. You shouldn't, anyway, if you know he hit .324 with five of his 12 stolen bases and an .883 OPS in September, showing he might have finally gotten comfortable after spending the whole season rehabilitating from the surgery. Is it a significant period of time? No, but it's reason enough to remember Furcal, who not long ago ranked among the top five or six shortstops in Fantasy. His season totals don't give him much credit. His .711 OPS was his worst since 2002, and his 12 steals were less than half the amount he had during even his worst healthy season. At age 32, he might have simply begun his decline, but you can't discount the impact of the back surgery. He's worth drafting late because of his good history and encouraging finish, but keep in mind you might get nothing more than another lost season from a washed-up player. (Updated 1/5/10)
