by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com (3/31/13) The Diamondbacks have optioned pitcher Randall Delgado to Triple-A Reno, according to MLB.com. The right-hander went 2-1 with a 7.45 ERA and a 1.97 WHIP in 19 1/3 innings of work this spring.

| Randall Delgado can't keep ball in park |
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com (3/23/13) Diamondbacks pitcher Randall Delgado endured a rough outing in Saturday's game against the Royals in Cactus League action. Delgado, who made his fourth start of the spring, could not keep the ball in the park, allowing three home runs in an 11-10 loss. He gave up solo home runs to Alex Gordon and Billy Butler in the first inning. He also allowed a solo home run to Elliot Johnson in the fifth.
Delgado was drilled by a Jeff Francoeur liner that bounced off the middle of his back in the fifth. He told reporters that he was fine after the game.
Delgado yielded six runs on nine hits in five innings. He also walked four and struck out two as his ERA rose to 6.88 this spring.

| Randall Delgado continues to boast case for rotation |
by Ed Gauna | CBSSports.com (3/18/13) After throwing four scoreless innings his last time out, Diamondbacks pitcher Randall Delgado had another sharp outing in Monday's Cactus League game against the Dodgers. He allowed two runs on six hits over five innings. The right-hander made it through the first four innings before giving up two runs in the fifth. Delgado also struck out three and walked one.
With Tyler Skaggs being optioned to Triple-A Reno on Monday, Delgado is competing with Patrick Corbin for the final spot in the rotation.

| Put Randall Delgado on your radar |
by Al Melchior | Data Analyst (3/18/13) With Tyler Skaggs getting sent to Triple-A Reno, the Diamondbacks' fifth starter's race now comes down to two contestants: Randall Delgado and Patrick Corbin. As a Fantasy owner, I'm rooting for Delgado. While Corbin has shown better control both in the majors and the minors, Delgado has better strikeout potential and showed a knack for inducing grounders over his 92 2/3 innings with the Braves last season. Of the two candidates, Delgado is the one I'd look for in mixed league drafts -- at least the deeper ones.

| D-Backs' pitching battle down to two |
by Bill Passonno | CBSSports.com (3/18/13) The Diamondbacks made the first trim in their competition for the final spot in the starting rotation Monday by optioning Tyler Skaggs to Triple-A Reno. That leaves only two players remaining in the battle -- Patrick Corbin and Randall Delgado -- with less than two weeks remaining before opening day.
Corbin appears to have a slight advantage, posting a 2-0 record and 3.68 ERA over five Cactus League games (three starts). He has also amassed 15 strikeouts to just four walks over 14 2/3 innings. Meanwhile, Delgado, one of the key pieces in the deal that sent Justin Upton to Atlanta in the offseason, has only appeared in three games and compiled a 6.43 ERA over seven innings of work.

| At times in 2012, Randall Delgado, who beat out Julio Teheran for the fifth starter role in spring training, looked like he was on the verge of meeting all the hype heaped on him when he was coming up through the minors. Twice he pitched a full eight innings, and he allowed three earned runs or fewer in 10 of his final 13 starts. Still, at age 22, he proved to be too erratic for a contending ballclub and was shipped to the minors in July. His biggest issue, as is often the case for young pitchers, was poor control. He didn't give up an especially high number of hits -- he just issued too many walks, which at times led to high pitch counts. Unlike his first stint with the Braves in 2011, he did produce a strikeout rate befitting of his talents, which shows he's able to fool major-league hitters. Still, the Braves decided to make him someone else's project this offseason, shipping him to Arizona in the Justin Upton deal. Because he'll have to overcome both Patrick Corbin and Tyler Skaggs for a rotation spot, he isn't worth drafting outside of NL-only leagues. (Updated 1/24/13) |
