Fantasy Analysis
Beavan was finally able to get off the schneid on Sunday ending his five-start winless streak. However, the 23-year-old was once again not able to pitch past the fifth inning, which has something that has been a problem for him all season long. Still, a win is a win and Beavan will now look to earn his second straight victory when he makes his next start, which is scheduled for Friday against the Angels. Despite going 1-0 with a 2.53 ERA in three starts against Anaheim last season, Fantasy owners should consider Beavan merely an AL-only option heading into his next start. (Updated 05/20/2012).

How much does a pitcher benefit from a good infield defense? Our Al Melchior shares some observations about a few pitchers that every owner should consider in his latest Beyond the Numbers.
After going 5-3 with a 4.45 ERA in 16 starts with Triple-A Tacoma, Blake Beavan made his major-league debut last July. He was expected to just see a few starts while Erik Bedard was on the mend, but after posting a 3.04 ERA over his first four outings, he remained in the rotation after Seattle traded away Doug Fister. He would go 4-4 with a 4.73 ERA over his final 11 starts and finished with a 4.27 ERA on the season. While his 42 strikeouts in 97 innings were not that impressive, he walked just 15 batters and posted a 1.25 WHIP. Beaven, who came over in the Cliff Lee deal, heads into 2012 with a spot secured in the rotation and should be able to improve at age 22. The Mariners are a young, rebuilding team that might not supply the right-hander with a ton of run support, but based on his ability to limit runs, he should be able to take his game to the next level. Target Beavan in AL-only formats on Draft Day but don't be surprised if he ends up making a splash in deeper mixed leagues. (Updated 1/3/12)
