| Colon is ROY in PR winter league |
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com (1/15/13) MLB.com reports Royals shortstop prospect Christian Colon took home rookie of the year honors in the winter league in Puerto Rico. Colon hit .301 with a .363 on-base percentage, one triple, one homer, eight doubles, 11 RBI, 26 runs and 13 stolen bases in 39 games for Leones de Ponce.
|
| Safe to say Christian Colon hasn't quite lived up to the hype since the Royals selected him fourth overall in the 2010. But after a disappointing first full season in 2011, he bounced back with a .301 batting average and .376 on-base percentage in 312 at-bats last year. Considering he'll soon be 24, he doesn't project to hit a bunch of homers or steal a bunch of bases, but if he continues to hit for a high average and get on base at Triple-A Omaha this year, he could quickly replace the overmatched Chris Getz at the major-league level. Colon's relatively low ceiling limits his appeal in long-term keeper leagues, but his proximity to the majors makes him a reasonable gamble in certain single-season AL-only formats. If all goes well, Colon could end up being sort of a more patient version of Mike Aviles. (Updated 1/8/13) |
