Mets trying to get Jeurys Familia to pitch up in the zone
|by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com|
|(3/27/15) Mets sinkerballer Jeurys Familia has made a living inducing ground balls and retiring righthanders. With injuries taking away several contributors from the Mets bullpen, however, the team wants to expand Familia's role, and that means moving his pitches up in the strike zone.
"The way he pitches, everything's down, down, down, down, down," manager Terry Collins said, per MLB.com's Anthony DiComo. "We've got to change the look. If he's going to be that guy who we think possibly could pitch deep in the game, he's got to be able to do a couple other things. There's going to be a time when you're going to need a strikeout, especially against lefties. If he can give them something else to look at, he's going to have a better chance to strike them out."
Pitching coach Dan Warthen has made changes to Familia's delivery to help him pitch up in the zone.
Familia has a 6.43 ERA so far this spring.
Mets' Collins: Closer role is Bobby Parnell's job to lose
|by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com|
|(12/8/14) Mets manager Terry Collins indicated Monday there will be a competition for the closer's role this spring, even though Jenrry Mejia performed well in the role last season. In fact, Collins even said injured reliever Bobby Parnell, who missed the 2014 season due to Tommy John surgery, is the incumbent closer.
"It's Bobby's (job) to lose," Collins said, per NJ.com. "I love competition."
Collins also mentioned Jeurys Familia and Vic Black as options for the closer's role. The Mets totaled 42 saves in 2014, with Mejia having a team-high 28 saves. Familia was second on the team with five.

Jeurys Familia could be in 2015 closer mix
|by Al Melchior | Data Analyst|
|(9/23/14) Mets manager Terry Collins told the Newark Star-Ledger that he wants Jeurys Familia to enter spring training next season with the goal of being the team's closer. Collins indicated that Familia would have an opportunity to close in 2015, particularly if Bobby Parnell has not completed his recovery from Tommy John surgery.
Familia has saved five games this season, but has served primarily in a setup role. In addition to getting 21 holds, he has posted a 2-5 record and a 2.30 ERA in 73 appearances.
