| Can John Lamb regain his pre-surgery form? |
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com (4/21/13) Royals pitching prospect John Lamb, who is getting further removed from Tommy John surgery in 2011, has started the season 1-2 with a 3.46 ERA and 1.39 WHIP through three starts for Class A Wilmington.
In this week's Down on the Farm column, I highlight Lamb as a player who might be reappearing on long-term keeper radars, if he can regain his pre-surgery form. In 2011, Lamb was ranked by Baseball America as a top 20 prospect (No. 18).

| John Lamb getting up to speed |
by Bill Passonno | CBSSports.com (3/24/13) Receiving additional work in the team's minor-league camp, Royals pitcher John Lamb has regained the velocity on his fastball after some slight concern earlier this spring, the Kansas City Star reports. Lamb has touched 87-91 mph in his past two starts, deemed an improvement after he allowed five hits in two innings during Cactus League play. The left-hander was optioned to Double-A Northwest Arkansas earlier this month.

| Lamb eager to get to majors |
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com (2/12/13) MLB.com reports Royals pitching prospect John Lamb is ready to resume his career after missing most of the 2012 season recovering from Tommy John surgery and a foot injury. "From what I've heard, [there are] no restrictions on me," Lamb said. "I don't know how much they're trying to throw me out here in the spring, but I'm just going out to compete and stay healthy. Obviously, my goal is Kansas City, sooner than later, but I can't rush the process. It's all on them, so I'm just trusting it and whenever I'm there, I'm there."

| A couple years ago, John Lamb rated as the Royals' top pitching prospect -- ahead of Mike Montgomery, even -- but as happens to so many young pitchers pushing the limits of their elbow ligaments, the lefty fell victim to Tommy John, undergoing the procedure midway through 2011. He returned to post a 6.92 ERA in six starts at the Rookie level last year, but chances are he hadn't completely regained his command only 14 months after surgery. His performance this year, a full 20 months after the procedure, will give a better indication of his recovery and help determine whether or not he still rates as one of the game's better pitching prospects. Because Lamb is only 22, the Royals are unlikely to push him in his first full year back, but with a strong showing, he could be a candidate for a rotation spot in 2014. Don't overlook him in long-term keeper leagues. (Updated 1/8/13) |
