|Jesse Biddle back in action Saturday |
|by R.J. White | CBSSports.com|
(7/26/14) Phillies pitching prospect Jesse Biddle returned to action Saturday, tossing two innings with the team's Gulf Coast League affiliate.
On Double-A Reading's temporary inactive list, Biddle has been out since June 23 to clear his mind of the negative thoughts he was having, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports. Working at the team's spring-training complex in the interim, the prospect has spoken to Roy Halladay, who also underwent mental issues in his career. Biddle is expected to remain with the Gulf Coast League affiliate for at least one more outing.

|Phils considering more time at Double-A for top prospects? |
|by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com|
(1/26/14) While it appears Maikel Franco and Jesse Biddle -- the Phillies' top two prospects, according to Baseball America -- are ready for Triple-A -- perhaps even the major leagues -- minor-league director Joe Jordan hasn't ruled out having both players open the season at Double-A.
"I really believe that both guys are future major league players, and good ones, and I think there's an argument for both guys to start the year back in Reading," Jordan told The Morning Call. "We're not going to push either guy but we'll be honest with ourselves and them, and if we feel like the best level to get the challenge they need is at Lehigh Valley, then let's go."
Jordan particularly seems interested in having Biddle open the year with Reading after the left-hander walked 5.3 batters per nine innings in 27 starts last season for the Double-A affiliate.
"Start there and finish the year at Triple-A and see what happens," Jordan said.
|Phillies pitching prospect Jesse Biddle finished 2013 with a 5-14 record, but that had more to do with Double-A Reading being a last place team in the Eastern League than an indictment of how the left-handed pitching prospect performed. Biddle did have his struggles after getting off to a stellar start in April, opening the year 2-1 with a 1.74 ERA and 40 strikeouts in five Aprils starts (31 innings). But Biddle would finish the year with a 3.64 ERA and 1.35 WHIP, as he pitched through a pair of ailments (whooping cough, plantar fasciitis). Still, Biddle finished third in the Eastern League with 154 strikeouts, which was the second straight season he surpassed 150 strikeouts. Where Biddle got into trouble was with his spotty fastball command, which led to a high walk rate (5.3 BB/9). Nonetheless, he is still considered the Phillies' best-pitching prospect, and the team hopes he develops into a middle-of-the-rotation arm for years to come. While Biddle will be in camp as a non-roster invitee, he's likely headed to Triple-A to open the year. Biddle could make his debut in 2014, but he should only be stashed in the deepest of Fantasy formats.
