| Michael Choice powering up at Triple-A |
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com (4/21/13) Athletics outfielder prospect Michael Choice is off to a promising start for Triple-A Sacramento. The 2010 first-round pick is batting .269 with a .507 slugging percentage and .886 OPS in 17 games.
Choice has also managed four doubles, four home runs, 15 runs and 18 RBI. Choice's fast start was good enough to land him in this week's Down on the Farm column.

| Taking a long look at Oakland OFs |
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com (4/14/13) Like many Fantasy owners, I faced a quandry Saturday night -- which Athletics outfielder to add off waivers with Yoenis Cespedes on the disabled list? There were three choices -- Seth Smith (owned 15 percent of leagues), Chris Young (23 percent) and Michael Choice (8 percent) -- but this decision really boils down to Smith and Young.
In the end, I decided to choose Young over Smith. The real determining factor was how well Smith was hitting left-handed pitchers. He's hitting .714 (5 for 8) against lefties. Why's that significant? Well, because Smith has struggled in his career against left-handed pitchers. He bats just .203 against lefties, which is why he wasn't a full-time player coming into the year. You can certainly subscribe to the theory Smith is turning the corner in his career, but I point out he hit just .167 against lefties this spring, so I'm not buying it.
Aside from the fact I think Smith is due for a market correction in the near future, I feel Young has room to grow. He's batting just .194 and perhaps playing on a regularly basis with Cespedes out of the lineup will allow him to settle into an offensive groove. Let's not forget the torrid start Young had to begin the 2012 season before hurting his shoulder.

| Michael Taylor misses out on roster |
by Bill Passonno | CBSSports.com (3/17/13) The Oakland Athletics pared down their roster Sunday, optioning outfielders Grant Green and Michael Taylor to Triple-A Sacramento. Both players were in the running for a spot on the opening day roster this spring, but could make an appearance with the parent club at some point during the season.
The Athletics also reassigned pitcher Brian Gordon, catcher Dave Freitas, first baseman Scott Moore, shortstop Dawrin Perez and outfielder Michael Choice to their minor-league camp.

| Choice off to fast start |
| (2/25/13) A's outfielder Michael Choice had another production day at the plate in Monday's spring game against the Indians. He went 2 for 3 with a homer, two RBI and two runs scored in the 14-10 loss. He launched a two-run shot off Frank Herrmann in the seventh inning. Choice has gone 5 for 7 (.714) with four RBI and three runs scored through three Cactus League games. "He's been swinging the bat awfully well and he's playing a good center field,"manager Bob Melvin said.

| Choice impressing in camp |
by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com (2/25/13) Oakland outfielder Michael Choice has impressed thus far in spring training, especially after hitting a home run Monday in a Cactus League game against Cleveland. "I'm feeling good, basically picking up from where I left off last year,'' Choice told the San Francisco Chronicle. Choice, who spent the last six months rehabbing after a broken hand ended his season last year, said his swing feels good as well.

2012 Draft Prep: Top 50 Fantasy prospects
Which prospects should you circle on your Draft Day cheat sheets in 2012? Our Scott White unveils his Top 50 prospects and identifies which players will make an impact on your Fantasy teams this summer.
|
| Michael Choice has rated among the top outfield prospects since the Athletics selected him 10th overall in 2010, but he also hasn't progressed much during that time. He hits for power, but he always hit for power. He still whiffs at a high rate and hasn't upped his batting average from the mid-.280s. Injuries deserve some of the blame for his lack of development -- he broke his left hand just when some of the adjustments he had made to his swing were beginning to pay off last July -- but at age 23, he may have reached a point where he isn't going to get much better. The good news is his steady production each step up the ladder suggests he should have a smooth transition to the majors when the time comes. It's just that he might end up being an all-or-nothing slugger who offers no better than a suspect batting average. Because he still has a fleeting hope of developing into more, Choice remains a decent option in long-term keeper leagues. Given his potential to contribute as a midseason callup, you wouldn't want to overlook him in AL-only leagues. (Updated 1/8/13) |
