Six pitchers vying for last two spots in Reds' rotation
|by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com|
|(3/9/15) Six pitchers are competing for the fourth and fifth spots in the Reds rotation, and a week into spring training games, the races are still too close to call.
The half dozen pitchers have combined to give up one earned run so far this spring.
Lefthander Tony Cingrani hit 94 MPH with his fastball, showing that last season's shoulder trouble is behind him.
Righthander Anthony DeSclafani gave up an unearned run in his first start. "I felt like everything was working," he said.
Manager Bryan Price declared Cingrani and DeScalfani the early favorites.RHP Jason Marquis has thrown five hitless innings to work his way into the mix. RHP Raisel Iglesias and LHPs David Holmberg and Paul Maholm have also been effective.
"At this point in time, we've got a great list," Price said to John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer. "It would be a very difficult challenge to feel like we've got it right if we had to make our team today because so many of these guys are performing at such a high level."
Reds' Price: David Holmberg 'throwing the ball beautifully'
|by R.J. White | CBSSports.com|
|(2/24/15) Reds manager Bryan Price praised the work of pitcher David Holmberg, who is competing for a spot in the rotation this spring, MLB.com reports.
"He's throwing the ball beautifully," Price said. "Most of the guys on the board have thrown the ball very well this spring. He's throwing the ball as well as anybody, from what I've seen of him. He looks like the guy we traded for."
Holmberg came into last year's camp overweight and struggled in his first work at the major-league level with the Reds. However, he was able to hold batters to a .176/.283/.329 line in 24 2/3 innings in September, which included three starts and one long relief appearance.
"He wasn't in shape when he got here, he gained some weight," Price said. "I don't know if his arm was in great shape or not. He addressed it immediately. We had to talk about it and address it. To his credit, not only did he make an immediate adjustment, he learned his lesson and came into camp this year in great shape."
Holmberg posted a 4.66 ERA and 56:33 K:BB ratio in 92 2/3 innings over 18 starts with Triple-A Louisville in 2014.

|(9/19/14) Reds pitcher David Holmberg turned in another solid outing but came away with a tough-luck loss Friday night against the Cardinals in St. Louis, dropping to 1-2 on the year.

He yielded two runs on five hits and three walks while striking out three over six innings of a 2-1 defeat. Of his 106 pitches, 63 were strikes.
