| Delino DeShields not the same threat on base paths |
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com (5/6/13) Astros second base prospect Delino DeShields hasn't had a banner start to the season at Class A Lancaster, especially on the base paths. After netting 101 stolen bases and getting caught just 19 times last season, DeShields has been caught stealing six times and has just five stolen bases through 21 games this year.
He's also batting .241 with a .344 on-base percentage, four triples, four doubles, four RBI and 16 runs. DeShields entered the season as the Astros' fifth-best prospect, according to MLB.com.

| DeShields earns high praise |
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com (3/10/13) The Astros endured their first cuts of the spring Sunday and a few of their top prospects were among the names reassigned to minor-league camp. Players reassigned Sunday were Delino DeShields Jr., Jake Goebbert, Marc Krauss, George Springer, Chris Wallace, Rudy Owens and Sam Demel. Astros manager Bo Porter came away impressed with DeShields. Delino did a great job," Porter said, per MLB.com. "Every situation we put him in, we gave him an opportunity to use his skill sets and he used him to the best of his ability and helped us win some ballgames. Like we told him, go down there and continue to work on the things you do well and allow your speed to impact the game. He did a tremendous job when he was here and we expect him to have a tremendous year.

2012 Fantasy outlooks: Houston Astros
To say the Houston Astros are rebuilding is an understatement, but they have more than a few surprises in the form of young talent. Michael Hurcomb breaks down the American League-bound franchise in his Fantasy team outlook.
|
| Delino DeShields is a prime example of why you shouldn't judge a high school draft pick too quickly. He was the eighth overall selection in the 2010 draft, yet the prospect hounds were ready to bury him when he hit only .220 for Class A Lexington in 2011 ... because, you know, breaking into profession baseball at age 18 is such an easy thing to do. He didn't need long to shut them up, going from being an overmatched free-swinger to a disciplined extra-base machine in the span of one year. And the speed ... goodness gracious, the speed. He stole 101 bases, for gosh sakes. The only reason he's not America's favorite young speedster right now is because Billy Hamilton stole 155. Clearly, DeShields offers the potential you'd expect for an eighth overall pick, so long-term keeper owners, get excited. Unfortunately, since he's only 20 and still playing in Class A, you have to figure he's a couple years from making a Fantasy impact. (Updated 1/4/13) |
