Angels DFA Conor Gillaspie; Kaleb Cowart promoted from Triple-A

by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(8/18/15) The Angels have designated infielder Conor Gillaspie for assignment. Gillaspie was acquired from the White Sox at the end of July, and went 13 for 64 with a home run and nine RBI in 17 games for the Halos.

In a corresponding move, infielder Kaleb Cowart was recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake City. Cowart was a first-round pick (18th overall) by the Angels in 2010. He slashed .285/..363/.442 in 113 games in the Angels' farm system this season.

The 23-year-old will be making his Major League debut on Tuesday, as he is in the starting lineup against the White Sox. He will play third base and bat ninth.

Angels prospect Kaleb Cowart bouncing back at the plate

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(5/21/15) The career of Angels third base prospect Kaleb Cowart appeared to be going backward. A demotion from Double-A to Class A tends to give that impression.

But Cowart is trying to make the best of it this year with Inland Empire. He reverted to his former batting stance, which features his hands farther away from his body and a more upright position. The results speak for themselves.

Cowart is not tearing the cover off the ball, but he has certainly improved. After an April in which he managed a slash line of .179/.229/.285, he is at .254/.338/.441 in May. And he has been particularly hot lately with a .308 mark in his last 10 games.

"[The stance] is something I wanted to go back to because it's when I was best in my career," Cowart told the Orange County Register.

The 22-year-old Cowart peaked in 2012, when he totaled 16 home runs and 103 RBI at two different minor-league levels.

Angels 3B prospect Kaleb Cowart back to switch-hitting

by Jason Butt | CBSSports.com
(3/30/15) The one-time Angels top prospect Kaleb Cowart is done with his experiment of being a left-handed batter only.

According to the Orange County Register, Cowart will resume switch-hitting again, most likely in an attempt to spark his once promising career. Cowart is coming off of two poor seasons in the minors, which led to the Angels not inviting him to big league camp this spring training.

The Angels are also discussing the possibility of converting Cowart into a pitcher if his hitting doesn't improve. Cowart hit just .223 with Double-A Arkansas a year ago.

Angels re-assign four to minor-league camp

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(3/11/14) The Angels re-assigned four players to minor-league camp Monday, including catcher Jett Bandy and infielders Kaleb Cowart, Eric Stamets and Alex Yarbrough.

Cowart, who is one of the top prospects in the organization, went 1 for 7 with one walk this spring. Bandy went 1 for 3 with a home run, Stamets went hitless in three at-bats and Yarbrough went 2 for 5 and scored a run.

Angels' top prospect off to rough start

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(5/6/13) Angels third base prospect Kaleb Cowart managed a season-high three hits Sunday for Double-A Arkansas, raising his season average up to .200. It was just his fifth multi-hit game of the season.

Cowart is having a rough start. On top of a .200 average, he has just a .324 slugging percentage and .593 OPS in 29 games. Cowart has managed two home runs, four stolen bases, seven doubles, seven RBI and 11 runs. Cowart is considered the Angels' top prospect by MLB.com.
