Fantasy Analysis
There is no doubt Grandal can hit the cover off the ball. He's one of the better hitting catchers in the minors. Grandal was a key piece in the Mat Latos trade with the Reds. He has a future in the majors, but with Nick Hundley manning the catcher's job for the Padres, the team doesn't have to rush Grandal to the majors. Grandal remains more of a long-term Fantasy keeper. Which prospects should you circle on your Draft Day cheat sheets in 2012? Our Scott White unveils his Top 50 prospects and identifies which players will make an impact on your Fantasy teams this summer.
With Devin Mesoraco ahead of him on the organization depth chart, Grandal clearly wasn't the Reds' catcher of the future, and the team made it official by shipping him to San Diego in the Mat Latos deal this offseason. Grandal, the 12th overall pick in the 2010 draft, might actually have the higher ceiling of the two. He improved his batting average every step up the minor-league ladder in his first full professional season, rising all the way from Class A Bakersfield to Triple-A Louisville. The move to the Padres, though not good for his power numbers, gives him a better chance of securing a major-league job at some point this season. The Padres might choose to play it safe with him, but considering he's already 23, a September callup would at least be in order. Grandal is clearly one of the best catchers to own in a long-term keeper league. When he eventually does become a starter in the majors, his offensive potential should make him an impact player at the position for years to come. (Updated 1/26/12)
